Currently, only 1.2% of international waters are protected, and only 0.8% are identified as “highly protected".

In this historical moment, UN member states have agreed on a legal framework to protect the world's oceans. The High Sea Treaty places 30% of the seas into protected areas by 2030, aiming to safeguard and recuperate marine nature.
