Why do so many children struggle to sit still in school?
Because movement isn’t a distraction from learning. It’s one of the ways children learn.
In Montessori classrooms, movement is woven into nearly everything we do. Children walk to collect materials, work on the floor, carry objects, move around their classmates, and even move as part of many lessons.
A child might be asked to bring 12 beads from a shelf, match shapes across the room, or read a label and act out the word. Learning happens through the whole body, not just through listening.
This doesn’t mean chaos. Children are carefully shown how to move in the environment. They learn how to walk, carry materials, navigate around others, and care for the classroom. Movement is refined, practiced, and purposeful.
We also provide opportunities to develop movement directly through activities like the Walking Line, where children challenge themselves to walk heel-to-toe, on tiptoe, backwards, carrying objects, or moving to a rhythm.
Children aren’t designed to sit still for hours and absorb information.
