Istar-Iscte ISTAR-Iscte, the Information Sciences, Technologies and Architecture Research Center is a research unit of Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon.

The ISTAR-IUL - Information Sciences and Technologies and Architecture Research Center is a ISCTE-IUL unit that has the mission to carry out applied and multidisciplinary research in the convergence of areas like Computer Science and Information Technologies, Mathematics (applied to computational problems), Architecture and Urbanism (in its digital dimensions, either conceptual, modelling, simulat

ion or fabrication). ISTAR-IUL identifies new areas of activity and presents a new project and mission. The team includes researchers coming from other units, both at ISCTE-IUL such as ADETTI (extinct), BRU, CIES and DINAMIA, and from other public universities in the Lisbon area, such as LaSIGE (FC/UL) and CITI (FCT/UNL, extinct).

ISTAR Researcher Nuno Geada will defend his PhD thesis entitled "The Impact of Digital Transformation on Healthcare Organizations in Portugal" on 29th July at 14h30 in the Exam Room in Building IV at Iscte. This thesis was supervised by Professors Bráulio Alturas, Associate Professor (with habilitation), Iscte-IUL and Pedro Anunciação, Escola Superior de Ciências Empresariais de Setúbal. The examination jury is composed by Professors Octavian Postolache, Full Professor, Iscte-IUL - chair of the jury, Ramiro Gonçalves, Full Professor, Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, Luís Lapão, Associate Professor (with habilitation), Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and António Trigo, Assistant Professor, Iscte-IUL.

ISTAR researcher Marcos Figueiredo will defend his PhD thesis on 23rd July at 14h30. The Phd thesis is entitled "Virtual Environments Presence. Older People Perceptions In Active Mobility Streetscapes" and was supervised by Professors Sara Eloy and Sibila Marques. The jury of the defence is composed by Professor Elisângela Vilar, Research Assistant, School of Architecture, University of Lisbon, Professor Francisco Serdoura, Associate Professor at Lisbon School of Architecture, University of Lisbon, Professor Rosália Guerreiro, Assistant Professor, Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, Iscte and Professor Sara Eloy, Associate Professor, University of Antuerp. 🗣🗣DI-REH – Digital Twin Reinterpretation of Historical Patterns is now open for registration!
This 5-day intensive workshop explores digital twins as a generative medium for heritage design, combining computational methods, digital fabrication, and craftsmanship in a hands-on setting.
Participants will reinterpret architectural ornaments and develop CNC-fabricated relief prototypes in timber or cork. The workshop concludes with a public exhibition at ISCTE.
When: 28 September – 2 October 2026
