Today, people in Porto are celebrating São João!
It’s one of my favorite festivals in Portugal, and it’s incredibly fun to take part in.

Just a heads-up: as you’ll see in the videos, people gently tap each other on the head with plastic hammers (martelos) and yes, I do it too and get tapped myself!

It’s all in good fun, but be kind and steer clear of anyone who’s clearly not in the mood. (Last year, someone hit me a bit too hard as I was leaving… that person were clearly drunk and not having the best night.)

👉 Key São João vocabulary:

(o) balão de São João = (the) São João balloon
(o) fogo de artifício = (the) fireworks
