Today, people in Porto are celebrating São João!
It’s one of my favorite festivals in Portugal, and it’s incredibly fun to take part in.

Just a heads-up: as you’ll see in the videos, people gently tap each other on the head with plastic hammers (martelos) and yes, I do it too and get tapped myself!

It’s all in good fun, but be kind and steer clear of anyone who’s clearly not in the mood. (Last year, someone hit me a bit too hard as I was leaving… that person were clearly drunk and not having the best night.)

👉 Key São João vocabulary:
(o) martelo = (the) hammer
(o) balão de São João = (the) São João balloon
(o) fogo de artifício = (the) fireworks

EN: I had a great time with these fun people! We passed the Pelourinho, the City Gate Tower, the Cathedral, the Islamic Cistern and the Castle. And we also saw the handsome D. Sancho where we took this beautiful photo.
