From building and testing their own ROV's to exploring marine biology, oceanography, and underwater technologies, this year's participants embraced every challenge with curiosity, creativity, and teamwork.

The 2026 edition of the Marine Robotics Summer School once again brought together students, researchers, and experts from Portugal and MIT to learn, collaborate, and push the boundaries of marine robotics in the unique setting of the Azores.

A huge thank you to all the students, instructors, guest speakers, and partners who made this edition possible. Your enthusiasm, dedication, and willingness to share knowledge are what make this school so special.

This summer, some MIT students are gaining hands-on experience through internships at different institutions across Portugal as part of the MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI).

MISTI gives MIT students the opportunity to experience the world while advancing knowledge, tackling real-world challenges, and preparing to make an impact in an increasingly interconnected global society.

But an international experience goes far beyond the workplace, it is also about discovering a new culture, meeting new people, and creating meaningful connections.

So, we brought the students together for a special cultural event in Porto! After a relaxed lunch and some time to connect and share their experiences in Portugal, it was time to discover one of the country's sweetest traditions: learning how to make pastéis de nata! 🥧

Through Internships, Study Abroad, Global Teaching Labs, and Global Classrooms, MISTI places global engagement at the heart of the MIT experience, creating opportunities to learn and connect across borders.

We hope our students leave Portugal with new skills, meaningful connections, great memories, and maybe even the secret to a perfect pastel de nata! 😋

After a week of building strong theoretical foundations, it's time to turn knowledge into action.

Week two of the Marine Robotics Summer School is now underway, and our students have officially started designing and building their own Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV's) to explore and investigate the ocean.

Before diving into the engineering challenge, participants spent the morning immersed in marine biology, visiting research laboratories at Okeanos - Instituto de Investigação em Ciências do Mar and discovering how scientists study marine ecosystems, from coastal habitats to the deep sea. They also explored cutting-edge research in electronic tagging of sharks and rays, as well as cetacean ecology, behaviour, and monitoring.

Armed with these insights, the teams are now moving into the implementation, testing, and deployment phases of their projects, bringing together robotics, oceanography, and biology to develop solutions for real-world ocean exploration.

Stay tuned as we follow their progress throughout the week! ☺️

Over the past few days, our participants have explored the foundations of marine robotics and oceanography through a combination of hands-on activities and interactive lectures.

From operating and understanding AUVs and ROVs to learning ocean observation techniques, oceanographic modelling, energy systems, and mission planning, students have been building the knowledge and skills needed to tackle real-world challenges in the marine environment.

Beyond the classroom, they also took part in practical demonstrations, water survival training, and even experienced the incredible waters of the Azores during a whale watching expedition, seeing first-hand the environment where many of these technologies are applied.

Next week, it's time to turn knowledge into action. The challenge begins as teams start designing, building, and implementing their own ROVs, putting everything they've learned into practice.

Stay tuned, the best is yet to come!☺️
