Yamadori trees are unique, but sometimes issues need to be solved. This Quercus faginea is a great example.

Main features ✅: Very old and beautiful branch, cool bark, and good size.
Problems ❌: Inverse taper in the middle of the trunk, and the first branch needs to be moved to fit the new front. Check photo n.3 📸
Work 🔨✂️: 1 - We noticed some old wood under the bark, so we removed it from that area — and got a nice surprise: hollow parts in the middle of the trunk (typical for this species). So we created a complete hollow shari from top to bottom. Lotof deadwood came out 👊. This solved the inverse taper problem and also prevented a future rotten trunk issue that wasn’t visible at first sight because of the bark. 2 - We used tension wires to move the first branch into the new front, then wired the whole tree for the first design work.
Plan 🗓️: At least two good growing seasons with some synchronized pruning. We only like to wire oaks during the first styling. After that, detailed pruning gets you a more natural silhouette. Check out some inspirational oaks in the last photos.

The right specie for today - Eclipse 🌗

By day, the open leaves maximize photosynthesis. By night, folding reduces water loss and may help the plant conserve heat or avoid signaling its presence to nocturnal insects. It’s a small, daily breathing of the tree — opening to light, closing into rest.

Big Pyracantha with almost 30cm nebari and 60cm in height. Very vigorous, with huge growth over the season. Unfortunately, with several mistakes in the main structure. The solution? Almost start over — hard pruning and wiring to correct the movements, and let’s go for the second season of growth this year. Sometimes trees must become “ugly” in order to acquire full beauty in the future. One step back in order to take two forward. 👊✂️🌳​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Even after removing all the wire and cleaning up the old needles — even without a fully refined look — it keeps its grace, elegance, and inspiring silhouette. Day by day, I fall more in love with this Portuguese Pinus sylvestris. 🙇🏻‍♂️🌲
