The pilot project on Madeira is complete... woohoo! 🎉Bravo ARTE.M cultural association on Madeira island
Madeira Whale Fest—a three-day celebration, imagined and brought to life by volunteers from over 25 organizations—was made possible with the support of the municipalities of Funchal and Caniçal, the Madeira Tourism Board, and the Instituto das Florestas e Conservação da Natureza, RAM. 🌊🐋
This was the first public event of the Madeira Whale Heritage Area, featuring 12 educational and art sessions in summer schools dedicated to learning about the lives of whales and dolphins. 🐬✨ The project was carried out in partnership with marine biologists and included 4 exhibitions, 1 parade, and 2 open-air celebration at the Whale Museum.
More than 100 volunteers, including young Madeirans, their teachers, and youth workers, came together to create this incredible event! 🙌🌿 We couldn’t have done it without your hard work and dedication!
Thank you to everyone who participated in this amazing journey! 💙

Art and Ocean Conservation Unite in Madeira
Our Portuguese partner ARTE.M cultural association on Madeira island are launching an exciting project: an art exhibition paired with a Madeira whale fest. This unique event celebrates Madeira's new Whale Heritage Area status while showcasing local creativity.
The project involves volunteers in creating art installations, blending community engagement with environmental awareness.
It's a great example of how art can drive meaningful change.
Well done to our partners for this inspiring initiative!
📅 Mark your calendars: October 4th!
We are thrilled to announce the upcoming opening of the exhibition ‘Islands.2024.Ocean’, proudly supported by the Municipality of Funchal. This year’s theme holds special significance as Madeira celebrates its recognition as a Whale Heritage Area. Our exhibition will dive deep into the ocean's mysteries, with a special focus on the vital role of whales and dolphins, key species in the mission to protect and raise awareness about marine life. This event will also serve as the official opening of Madeira Whale Fest 2024, marking the first collaboration between our art center and this important environmental initiative.
Celebrating the 24th anniversary of our worldwide "Islands" exhibition, we investigate not just the sea but also the strong and sad topic of fire. A unique exhibit will pay tribute to the volunteer attitude that brought hundreds of people together against terrible flames. Under the European Solidarity Corps initiative, ARTE.M volunteers will help this project by sharing their personal stories, therefore reminding us that fire is a worldwide concern.
Our project has been recognized as a best practice in the Service Learning methodology, which emphasizes learning through practical experience and volunteerism. The project, “Service Learning” Service Learning in culture project 2023-1-PL01-KA210-YOU-000156000, is co-funded by Erasmus+ of the European Union.
Join us for this meaningful exhibition that blends art, community resilience, and environmental awareness! 🌊🐋🔥
