Dissertation public jury defense of Master in Spatial Design candidate Ulisses Andrade oriented by Professor Shujoy Chakraborty.

“Revitalizing wasted urban pockets: prefabricated modular housing construction for 21st century cities.”

Portugal has a housing crisis with falling incomes for middle income young demographics post 2008 crisis.

Research question originated in 2 semesters of design studio housing and construction projects:
Can a rapid construction design system achieve a low cost high quality 55-75sq mts apartment for 25.000€?
(Excluding your ikea furniture and appliances)
A home at the cost of a car.

Thesis looked at past developments like Kisho Kurasawa (capsule tower) and Moshe Safdie (Habitat 67) from the 60s-70s prefabricated golden era and reapplied the design construction technologies for 21st century urban realities.

An applied research project on regenerating wasted urban spaces like under bridges and dead spaces with private housing developments.

Pilot proposal was a site in downtown Funchal - a Portuguese high density Atlantic insular capital city.

Design rendering details to following.

Prof. Jeremy Aston, Department Director of products / mobility /furniture design at Portugal offers a sketching and form communication training workshop to UMa students.

Workshop Title - Exploration sketching for the product design process.

Some pictures in this post and watch our stories for our virtual classroom screenshots!

Within the product creation process, sketching ideas on paper is the most efficient way of thinking visually, addressing problems and communicating ideas. This is common practice for most projects within design communities, before presenting product concepts to marketing, sales or engineering.

Happy healthcare for Madeira 🙂
We designed a dermatological clinic!

With a dash of parametric design and Grasshopper to overcome those doctor visit anxieties.

Semester challenge for 2019/2020 Spatial Design Masters.

Pedagogic teamwork of Prof. Shujoy Chakraborty and Arq. Wojciech Hydzik, Principal Nuumstudio on technical guidance, 3d modeling coordination and bringing project commercial realities to our studio classes.

Students learned design theory on hospital equipment, technical furniture, surgical protocols, EU norms on hygiene, illumination, materials and Funchal city building codes.

Foi boa! 👏🏼

Pavilion build complete! 🛠

UMa’s design research office team concludes their summer project for 2019.
We built another parametric pavilion.
The theme this year was to showcase the design and research innovation capacity of University of Madeira at the Expomadeira 2019.

7 images showing the parametric and geodesic system design details!

Comments welcome! 😁

ExpoPavilion V2: 😁

Its bigger and its better!
UMa Rectorship charged us with projecting a digital UMa through spatial design.
A 21st century UMa!
>>>
The project which introduced parametric design and digital architecture to Madeira is back for 2019!
>>>
The 2019 edition is more advanced with a full LED wall and a geodesic spaceframe wall.
>>>
The design process :
Modeled using parametric design methods and tested in full immersive virtual reality (VR) using a head mount display (HMD) to check detail design and structure joints integrity.
>>>
Follow our instagram stories to gather process insights and how the spatial designers craft this project in the MITI workshop.
