Why trauma-informed yoga matters💥

Yoga has the potential to be deeply healing.
But without understanding the nervous system, it can also unintentionally reinforce survival patterns.

⚡⚡Some examples:

• Holding difficult poses for a long time can teach perseverance—but for someone whose body doesn't feel safe, it may reinforce overriding pain and bodily signals.

• "Go deeper" mentality and group dynamics can encourage people to disconnect from their body's boundaries instead of listening to them.

• Fast-paced Vinyasa: for someone already living in chronic stress, constantly trying to keep up may reinforce the same urgency and hyperarousal they experience in daily life.

• Long periods of stillness in Yin Yoga can be —especially those already in a freeze response— feel threatening or overwhelming without appropriate support and cues.

• "Just breathe through it." Sometimes breathing helps. But sometimes difficult emotions or traumatic memories need to be acknowledged, titrated, and safely processed—not simply breathed through or suppressed.

• Rigid ideas about the "correct" pose can activate perfectionism, fear of failure, shame, or memories of criticism in people who grew up with conditional acceptance or harsh authority figures.

• Trying to perform poses perfectly can shift attention away from interoception—the ability to feel and trust your own body—which is one of the foundations of healing.

• Spiritual language, chanting, or surrender practices can also be activating for some people, particularly those with histories of religious trauma or coercive environments.

👉🏽What trauma-informed yoga looks like

A trauma-informed teacher understands that there is no one-size-fits-all practice.

Instead of asking,

"How can I get students deeper into the pose?"

they ask,

"What does this nervous system need to feel safe?"

Sometimes that's movement.

Sometimes it's stillness.

Sometimes it's simply having a choice.

Somatics isn’t gentle by definition - it’s honest.

And the body, when you really listen to it, contains everything.

Stillness and storm.
Whisper and roar.

All of it felt from the inside out, from that deep core that knows before the mind does.

Do you recognize yourself in the parallelism of the somatic universe?

The most common issue I see in people around me is chronic stress and disconnection from the body.
Nervous systems that lost their ability to distinguish between a real threat and a packed to-do list or a moody boss🤡

That’s when we see anxiety, tension, overwhelm, fatigue, hypervigilance, and a constant feeling of being “on.”
Not to mention the various diseases caused by living in fight or flight.

👉🏾Yin Yoga can be a powerful tool for nervous system regulation, because long, supported holds invite the body into a parasympathetic state — the rest, digest, and restore response.

💥 But here’s what i miss in most Yin classes:

It’s not just about the poses.

It’s about how you guide students through them🪷

It’s the breath.
It’s the awareness.
It’s the relationship to sensation.
It’s the ability to stay present with what arises.

That’s where the somatic work begins.

👁️Inside our 50–100 Hour Yin Yoga Teacher Trainings, you’ll learn:

→ How to understand the nervous system states your students are moving through during practice
→ Trauma-informed language that creates choice, safety, and agency
→ How to recognize activation, overwhelm, or shutdown and respond skillfully
→ The psycho-somatic theory behind poses and sequences
→ How to guide classes with more depth, precision, and safety
→ Fascia Release Techniques for tension- and emotional relief

And most importantly:

You won’t just learn the theory.

🦁You’ll experience it in your own body first.
Because the best facilitators teach from embodiment, not memorization.

If you’re ready to teach Yin Yoga as a practice of nervous system regulation, embodied awareness, and genuine transformation, we’d love to welcome you.

The missing piece isn’t in your books. It’s in your body. ✨

I used to think healing meant understanding my patterns, my past, my wounds.
I could intellectually explain my story, yet my body was still reacting with anxiety, numbness, and hypervigilance.

What changed everything wasn’t learning more… it was learning how to actually be with my body. It was realizing my system wasn’t broken—it was trying to protect me.

Trauma isn’t just a memory; it’s a physiological experience living in our nervous system and fascia.

As Tom Myers notes, our cells need a “Goldilocks” tension environment to function happily. When we trap survival energy inside, our tissues become tight, restricted, and numb.

Talk therapy helps us make sense of our story, but somatic and fascia-based practices complete the processes that words alone cannot reach.

Healing requires embodiment. It requires dropping out of the mind and guiding the nervous system back to safety.

🚀 READY TO GO DEEPER?

If you're ready to move past just "thinking" and offer deep, somatic experiences for yourself and your clients, our upcoming trainings are for you.
We show you practical tools to work with the nervous system in any class and release stored tension in the body.
