As the land begins to wake and warm this Imbolc, we are feeling huge gratitude. We lay in a bright yellow field of wood sorrel and meditated on the sap rising and the seeds awakening. We made candles on the fire to celebrate the light returning and planted a hazel tree for a lost loved one. Blissful days on the farm ✨🌱🌀

🪱Worm guardians!🪱 Over the past few weeks an interest has been building in insects that live underground, and this week we decided to make a habitat to observe worms closely, and to find out more about their place in the ecosystem. Over the years we have been told just how important bees are to the planet. However, what we haven’t heard so much about are worms! Worms do just an important job as bees they create the very nutrients available to the plants — which the bees then pollinate.
The number of bees and worms is in decline, serious decline. And our soil needs help. As we turn to more plant-based foods we now need our bees and worm friends more than ever as they provide a vital service to our food production! Worm guardians unite! Provide food for worms by leaving organic matter on the soil- mulch, compost, leaf litter, chop and drop weeds… give back to the soil. Grow your own and buy from local farmers not using harmful farming practices. Empowering little people to make the change 🪱❤️🌏

Over the last few weeks our learning community has flowed on path of fascination with the beauty of leaves. We have given thanks to the walnut, cherry, nesperra and ginko, as their leaves turn golden and drop, allowing us to gather them and craft with them, pressing them into clay to create leaf dishes to hold treasures. We painted and printed with them to create nature journals to cherish, and a journey of observing and recording the wonders that we find on the farm has begun. Already we have watched a caterpillar pupate and hibernate for the winter, discovered hundreds of worms and adventured into their night time feeding habits and magical poo (casts), and seen mica cap mushrooms pop up overnight and be eaten by sheep in the same day. ‘Look deep into nature, then you will understand everything better’ Albert Einstein

What fun to build together! Using recycled materials, measuring, planning, using tools, fixing…. Together we are making a space where the children can access everything they need to follow their passions. Such an empowering process, so much to learn 💪🏽❤️✨

A day to celebrate the magestic walnut tree! We climbed high (tree climbing is extremely popular on the farm at the moment ❤️), harvested, cracked, tasted, and explored our ancestor tree’s many gifts, tie-dying with walnut hulls (a powerful dye that can be used without a mordant). When we harvest we give back to the land, and the children planted walnuts to overwinter safe in our tree nursery and sprout in the spring. The children are beginning to dream of growing a forest together one day, what a magical dream indeed 🌳✨

This week we harvested walnuts and pomegranates and used them to bake delicious dragon bread. Bonds with these trees are forming and next week we hope to explore more of their gifts. In the spirit of reciprocity when we take from the land we are sure to give back, and we cared for the soil adding organic matter and preparing beds in the food forest. Dreams and plans for what we will plant are hatching and the children are involved every step of the way ✨🌳

This week we celebrate the turning of the wheel, Mabon, the autumn equinox. A time to harvest (grapes, pomegranate and walnuts to name a few), give thanks, review and revisit our goals. And so we created the tree of dreams to welcome our older children back to the farm. A place to express hopes and dreams for their autumn on the farm. Making friends, planting vegetables, roasting apples on the fire, sewing, felting, building a treehouse were just a few brilliant ideas! And as their personal projects begin to take shape, we are excited to see how they evolve as each child is given ownership, choice and responsibility to plan and execute their project, take it further if they choose, and share their passion with their friends.
