Tool skill impacts the archaeological evidence across technological primates - Scientific Reports The archaeological record offers insights into our evolutionary past by revealing ancient behaviour through stone and fossil remains. Percussive foraging is suggested to be particularly relevant for the emergence of tool-use in our lineage, yet early hominin percussive behaviours remain largely unde...

The Adaptive Role of Bark in the Diet of Budongo Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) - International Journal of Primatology 05/07/2024

Another incredibly important publication led by Elodie Freymann on bark feeding behaviour and the potential medicinal value of this behaviour for apes. Elodie is on fire publishing her PhD papers at high speed - and I am so very proud of her work, and the work of all the collaborators who accepted her in Budongo, closely guided the field work and made Elodie's research possible in the lab: Cat Hobaiter Budongo Conservation Field Station Mike Huffman Daniel Sempebwa and all.

Check the tread with summary of findings:

The Adaptive Role of Bark in the Diet of Budongo Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) - International Journal of Primatology The ingestion of bark has been observed across the animal kingdom and is well documented in free-ranging chimpanzees. Thus far, the best-supported hypothesis for the adaptive function of this behavior is the fallback food hypothesis, which asserts that chimpanzees consume bark and cambium when prefe...

Chimpanzés selvagens usam mesmo plantas medicinais para tratar doenças e ferimentos 21/06/2024

Super congratulations to Dr Elodie Freymann, the amazing team that worked so hard at Budongo Conservation Field Station, to Dr Fabien Schultz Ethnopharmacology Lab, to Cat Hobaiter for the amazing guidance and mentoring, and Mike Huffman -- with infinite knowledge about this topic. It was an honour for me to see this work develop & to be part of the journey. The article is everywhere in the world news today, and it is well deserved. It is important to spread the news in multiple languages, so that the science can be understood by all. 🙌🐵🌿
