[PT] Agency and Limit: The Human Condition in Early Modern Europe

O Instituto de Estudos Filosóficos (IEF) apresenta o ciclo de seminários “Agency and Limit: The Human Condition in Early Modern Europe”, coordenado por Antonio Gerace.

17h00–18h00

[ENG] Agency and Limit: The Human Condition in Early Modern Europe

The Institute for Philosophical Studies (IEF) presents the seminar series “Agency and Limit: The Human Condition in Early Modern Europe”, coordinated by Antonio Gerace.

The series explores how subjects in Early Modern Europe navigated the tension between individual initiative and institutional power. Following a philosophical trajectory from political sovereignty to inner life, the five seminars examine different ways of thinking about, contesting, and preserving human freedom under conditions of significant constraint.

Throughout the series, the programme addresses the conceptual boundaries of absolute power (potestas absoluta), the suspension of ordinary law in contexts of pandemics and emergencies, the relationship between nature, grace, and freedom, the global circulation of ideas through translation, and the transformation of texts into instruments of confessional and ideological conflict. The series concludes with a reflection on attention and inner discipline as forms of preserving agency in times of crisis.

Sessions:
October 13 · November 24 · February 2 · March 16 · April 20
5–6 p.m.

Antonio Gerace received his PhD in Religious Studies from KU Leuven, Belgium, in 2017, where he also worked as a postdoctoral researcher from 2017 to 2018, focusing on the development of biblical studies in the Early Modern Netherlands. He subsequently worked in Bologna, first at the Fondazione per le Scienze Religiose (2018–2023) and later at the University of Bologna (2024–2025).

In 2026, he joined the Institute for Philosophical Studies (IEF) as an assistant researcher, working on the project Finding a Way: Eternal Predestination, Temporal Grace and Human Free Will in 16th-century Coimbra, funded by FCT (project no. 2024.08419.CEECIND; Principal Investigator: Antonio Gerace). He is the author of two books and numerous articles and book chapters focusing on the history of the Church in the Early Modern period.

[ENG] IEF - Echoes of Gramsci: Philosophy of Praxis, Subalternity, Hegemony

On October 9, the Institute for Philosophical Studies (IEF), the Centre for Social Studies and the International Gramsci Society Portugal (IGS-Portugal) will organise at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra the colloquium “Echoes of Gramsci: Philosophy of Praxis, Subalternity, Hegemony”.

The event will bring together several researchers and academics whose work engages with the thought of Antonio Gramsci and, through thematic panels, will explore the echoes of the thought of one of the major thinkers of our time.

The centenary of the first publication of “The Southern Question” serves merely as a starting point for stimulating debate on processes of subalternisation, class formation, colonialism, popular revolts and resistance, as well as on literature, international relations and economics, from a plural perspective.

This theme requires an analysis of the social, economic and political relations established between centre and periphery, at regional, national and international levels, with particular consideration given to Portugal and the analysis of its development, culture and education, social and political struggles, and the formation of intellectuals.

The Institute for Philosophical Studies (IEF) of the University of Coimbra has just published, in the Traphicae: Philosophical Translations of Essential Authors collection, a bilingual edition (Latin-Portuguese) of a small but precious testimony to this revolution: the chapter “De tubo optico” / “On the Optical Tube”, written by the Italian Jesuit Cristoforo Borri (1583–1632) and published in 1631 as part of his major work, Collecta astronomica.

As Luís Miguel Carolino explains in the introductory study accompanying the edition, this is the first text printed in Portugal to present the telescope and explain its optical functioning. Borri, who had been a professor of mathematics at the College of Arts in Coimbra and at the College of Santo Antão in Lisbon, did not merely describe the instrument: he sought to justify why it could be trusted. At a time when many questioned whether that tube with two lenses—one concave, the other convex—revealed reality or merely produced optical illusions, Borri argues, with the rigour of someone who also discusses prisms and distorting glasses, that the telescope faithfully “makes visible” what already existed.

Borri’s life is, in itself, worthy of a novel: a student in Milan, a professor in Coimbra and Lisbon, a missionary in Vietnam and Macau, the author of the first European description of Cochinchina, a correspondent of Persian scholars, and a defender, against Aristotelian orthodoxy, of Tycho Brahe’s cosmological system. He had probably observed irregularities on the surface of the Moon for the first time even before reading Galileo, through a telescope he is thought to have used in Italy around 1609–1610. Years later, already in Coimbra, he took part in observations of the Moon with the scientific circle gathered around André de Almada. The graphic representation of these observations, included in the Collecta astronomica, is now considered one of the earliest printed records of European selenography and the first printed image of an astronomical observation made in Portugal.

In addition to the Latin text and the Portuguese translation by Isadora Monteiro, revised by Cristina Abranches Guerreiro, the volume includes the two original geometric figures with which Borri explains, step by step, how the convex lens increases the angle of vision and how the concave lens corrects the confusion of the image on the retina. It is an optical argument constructed with ruler and compass, but also with genuine fascination: Borri calls the telescope “the eye of the new astronomy”, capable of confirming through the senses what had previously only been calculated through geometry.

A small treatise, therefore, with a significant place in the history of science in Portugal—now accessible in Portuguese.

Isadora Monteiro, born in Portugal in 1995, has pursued her academic career in the Humanities, specialising in the History and Philosophy of Science. As part of her master’s degree, she focused her research on Robert Hooke’s contributions to the development of a Universal Law of Gravitation. This research resulted in two articles published internationally, as well as a book that constitutes the first work published in Portugal on the English experimental philosopher. She is currently completing her PhD, whose dissertation focuses on the emergence of the telescope in Europe. As part of this project, she is completing the pioneering translation of Girolamo Sirtori’s Telescopium sive ars perficiendi novum illud Galilaei visorium in tres partes divisa (1618). Through her work, the author has sought to contribute to the dissemination and study of fundamental sources for the History and Philosophy of Science in the Early Modern Period.
