CERES is pleased to announce that Inês Patrícia Diegas Borges successfully defended her PhD thesis on 17 June 2026, entitled "Towards a Circular Phosphorus Economy: Capture and Recovery using Layered Double Hydroxides".
The thesis was developed within the PhD Programme in Refining, Petrochemical and Chemical Engineering under the supervision of Professor Margarida Quina.
We warmly congratulate Inês Borges on this important academic achievement and wish her continued success in her future scientific and professional endeavours.

Researchers are invited to participate in the “Open Science Communities at the University of Coimbra” meeting, which will showcase Open Science initiatives, projects, and practices developed within CERES.
This year's meeting will take place on 19 October 2026, as part of the International Open Access Week. The event will focus on two converging themes: Open Science policies and Open Science practices within the Research Units of the University of Coimbra. One of its main objectives is to demonstrate how different scientific fields apply the principles of Open Science.
Contributions may be submitted in one of the following formats:
A presentation of approximately 15 minutes; or
A one-hour workshop, provided that the topic is of potential interest and benefit to the wider University of Coimbra community.

On June 2 and 3, the University of Coimbra will host a meeting of the CHEERS4EU project.
The CHEERS4EU project aims to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy across several European regions by focusing on the development and strengthening of Circular Hubs. Through the exchange of best practices and collaborative approaches related to Circular Hubs, the project seeks to reinforce all EU regions in the field of Circular Economy.
The meeting will bring together partners from Portugal, Spain, the Czech Republic, Austria, Denmark, Finland, and the Netherlands.
On June 2, the meeting will take place at the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Coimbra, while the sessions on June 3 will be held at the Student Hub.
The project involves nine professors and researchers from the University of Coimbra, representing several faculties and departments, including FCTUC (DEQ, DEC, DEM, and DCV), FEUC, and FDUC. Four research centres are also participating in the project: CERES, CEMMPRE, CeBER, and the Instituto Jurídico.

On May 13th, the Department of Chemical Engineering hosted the 3rd CERES Talks – Students Edition, organized by CERES. This edition brought together undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD students, as well as research fellows, highlighting their contributions to the center’s scientific activity.
The event featured four oral presentations, one from each thematic line, covering topics such as molecular simulation, selective extraction of high-value chemical compounds, sustainable textiles, and functional foods.
In addition, 32 posters were presented across the different thematic lines, with four Best Poster Awards attributed - one per thematic line.
The afternoon ended with a networking and social gathering, organized in collaboration with NEDEQ/AAC, providing a great opportunity to strengthen connections within the academic community.
Congratulations to all presenters and awardees for their excellent work, and thank you to everyone who contributed to such an engaging and inspiring event!

On May 11, 2026, the PhD defense of Teresa Cernadas took place at the Department of Chemical Engineering, with the presentation of the thesis entitled “Development of UV-sensitive materials for rapid and minimally invasive tissue repair”.
The work was carried out under the supervision of Doctor Paula Ferreira, Doctor Patrícia Alves, and Professor Ilídio Correia.
CERES congratulates the new Doctor on this important academic and scientific achievement and wishes her continued success in her future personal and professional endeavors.

On May 4, CERES welcomed an academic publishing workshop hosted by MDPI, designed to equip researchers with essential knowledge and practical tools for successful scientific publication.
The exclusive session focused on key aspects of MDPI’s open access publishing model, offering participants a comprehensive overview of journal selection strategies, the editorial workflow, and best practices in publication ethics. The workshop provided valuable insights into how researchers can effectively navigate the publishing process in an increasingly competitive academic landscape.
Led by experienced editors, the event also emphasized practical guidance on improving scientific writing. Participants received actionable tips on improving their scientific writing and addressing reviewer comments, guided by experienced editors.
The initiative reflects CERES’s ongoing commitment to supporting researchers in developing their academic careers and strengthening the impact of their scientific contributions.

🎓 On April 27, 2026, the PhD defense of Sofia Aníbal Vaz took place at the Department of Chemical Engineering. Sofia successfully defended her thesis, “Microalgae Systems for Wastewater Treatment and Resource Recovery,” supervised by Prof. Rui Martins, Prof. Helena Pinheiro, and Prof. Laura Monteiro.

This month’s CERES Talks will carry a particularly special meaning. Beyond the usual space for sharing knowledge and fostering discussion, this session will also be dedicated to honoring Professor Lino Santos.
The event will bring together invited guests who had the privilege of working and collaborating with Professor Lino Santos. They will share memories, experiences, and insights, celebrating both his professional contributions and his personal impact on the academic community.
At the end of the session, a tribute ceremony will take place as part of the official renaming of room C16 at DEQ. The ceremony will culminate in the unveiling of a plaque, designating the space as the Laboratório de Sistemas Lino Santos.
We invite everyone to join us for this important moment, as we come together to honor someone who meant so much to colleagues, students, and staff.

An Academic Publishing Workshop organized by MDPI Spain SL will take place at the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Coimbra on May 4, 2026.
The workshop is free of charge for participants and will cover the following topics:

The session is scheduled for May 4, 2026, from 10:00 to 12:00. Participation is open to all researchers; however, PhD students may particularly benefit from this workshop.
