Ciepqpf CERES | Chemical Engineering and Renewable Resources for Sustainability é um Centro de Investigação instituído na Universidade de Coimbra (UC).

Foi constituído em 1994 com o nome CIEPQPF. Em 2023, o CIEPQPF passou a designar-se por CERES. O CERES - Chemical Engineering and Renewable Resources for Sustainability (em português: Centro de Engenharia Química e Recursos Renováveis para a Sustentabilidade), é um Centro de Investigação instituído na Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra (FCTUC), integrado no sistema científico e tecnológico nacional (SCTN) financiado pela Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) (Unidade nº 102). Foi constituído em 1994 com o nome CIEPQPF - Centro de Investigação em Engenharia dos Processos Químicos e dos Produtos da Floresta.

From 20 to 22 October, CERES will be taking part in this major gathering bringing together science, business and the local community, at the Figueira da Foz Industrial and Business Park. 🌊💡

European Researchers’ Night 2026 ✨🌍
CERES is pleased to participate in the European Researchers’ Night 2026, a Europe-wide initiative that brings science closer to society through engaging and interactive activities. This year’s edition will take place on 25 September 2026 in Coimbra, offering visitors of all ages the opportunity to explore research, innovation, and scientific discovery.
The European Researchers’ Night (ERN) is one of the largest science communication initiatives in Europe, connecting researchers and citizens through free and accessible experiences. Celebrated across dozens of countries, ERN highlights the role of research in addressing societal challenges and improving everyday life, while fostering dialogue between scientists, communities, and the public.
In Coimbra, the event will once again transform the city into a dynamic meeting point for science and society, featuring hands-on activities, demonstrations, exhibitions, and opportunities to interact directly with researchers from a wide range of disciplines.

The 15th International Chemical and Biological Engineering Conference (CHEMPOR 2027) will be held from 29 June to 2 July 2027. This edition is organized by the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Coimbra and the Portuguese Engineers Association.
The CHEMPOR conference serves as a dynamic platform for researchers, professionals, and students in Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, and related fields to share ideas, discuss recent scientific and technological developments, and strengthen connections between academia and industry.
CHEMPOR highlights the broad relevance of Engineering and Technology in a multitude of topics, always with a focus on sustainable development, circularity and societal needs. The conference also seeks to boost the international collaborations and promote the visibility and engagement of students within the global Chemical Engineering community.

The event featured presentations by Dr. José Gamelas, researcher at the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Coimbra, and Professor José Herrero from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Both speakers shared their knowledge and perspectives in an engaging discussion.

On July 15, Catarina Fernandes successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled “Valorization of Lignocellulose Biomass: Development of Sustainable Lignin-Based Derivatives for Hair Care Applications”, as part of the PhD Programme in Chemical Engineering.
Her research was supervised by Professor Graça Rasteiro and Dr. Luís Alves, and focused on the development of sustainable lignin-based derivatives obtained from lignocellulosic biomass for application in hair care products, contributing to the valorization of renewable resources and the promotion of more sustainable solutions.
CERES is pleased to congratulate Catarina on the successful completion of her doctoral studies and welcomes her as the newest PhD graduate of the research centre. We wish her continued success in her future scientific and professional career.

CERES is pleased to announce that Alexandre Jorge successfully defended his PhD thesis, entitled “Development of Circular and Sustainable Textile Dyeing Processes Using Aqueous Two-Phase Systems”, on 14 July 2026.
The work was carried out within the PhD Programme in Chemical Engineering under the supervision of Professor Jorge Pereira.
This achievement represents an important contribution to the development of more sustainable and circular approaches for the textile industry.
CERES congratulates Alexandre on this accomplishment and wishes him every success in his future career.

On 1 July, Cátia Mendes successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled “Valorization of Agro-Foresty Lignocellulosic Residues: Ethanol Production by Integrated Bioprocesses”, as part of the PhD Programme in Chemistry Engineering.
Conducted under the supervision of Professor Graça Carvalho and Professor Jorge Rocha, this research reflects years of dedicated work and scientific commitment.
This achievement reflects Cátia’s dedication, hard work, and commitment to advancing knowledge in the field of sustainable biomass valorization and bioethanol production.
CERES warmly congratulates Cátia Mendes on this remarkable accomplishment and wishes her continued success in her future academic and professional achievements.
