Bartolomeu Dias (c.1450-1500), portuguese navigator involved with two maritime milestones: a) on February 3, 1488, he proved the connection between the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean by rounding the Cape of Storms, later designated of Good Hope by King D. João II in view of the prospect of reaching India by sea; b) he died near this passage in 1500, in the sinking of the ship he commanded in the fleet of Pedro Álvares Cabral who, on his way to India, landed for the first time in Brazil.
