On July 31, CeDRI welcomed a delegation from the University of La Laguna, as part of the STARS EU Alliance.

The visit strengthened collaboration between the institutions and provided an opportunity to showcase CeDRI’s laboratories and research activities.

The meeting highlighted CeDRI’s commitment to innovation, applied research, and international cooperation.

On July 28, CeDRI had the pleasure of welcoming a group of around 35 children, aged 6 to 12, from the Pontes de Inclusão E9G Project (Fundação Casa de Trabalho), accompanied by their group leaders.
This playful, educational visit gave the children a close-up look at
some of CeDRI's research areas through hands-on, interactive
demonstrations, including drones and artificial intelligence, computer vision, 3D printing, industrial robotics, competition robots, and a robotic dog.
The initiative reinforces CeDRI's commitment to bringing science and technology closer to the community, especially to younger generations, through practical, engaging, and accessible experiences.

CeDRI is pleased to share that the project "A digitalização como ferramenta para melhorar a sustentabilidade do processo de recolha seletiva", developed by our researcher Adriano Silva, Thadeu Brito, and Profs. Ana I. Pereira and José Lima, has been featured by Ponto Verde Lab.

The project presents an intelligent waste collection monitoring system based on ultrasonic sensors, LoRaWAN communication, and optimization algorithms to support more efficient and sustainable collection operations. Developed in collaboration with Resíduos do Nordeste and supported by Sociedade Ponto Verde, the work demonstrates how digital technologies can contribute to improving waste management and advancing the circular economy.

💡 SMARTLIGHT: Halfway through the project — Live demonstrations and a spotlight on the demonstration site!

On 22 July 2026, another meeting of the SMARTLIGHT project consortium took place. The project is developing an innovative, smart and multifunctional street lighting solution, featuring integrated sensors, cutting-edge computing and artificial intelligence.

With 17 months of the project now complete and the project now halfway through its duration, this meeting was particularly special: for the first time, the partners — FISOLA, IPB/CeDRI, Drivetel and TURNPAGE — were able to watch live demonstrations of what has been developed so far, with a focus on:

🔌 PCBs — the printed circuit boards developed for the system

⚙️ Backend — the FIWARE architecture and the platform’s data processing

🖥️ Frontends — the platform’s management and monitoring interfaces

🔒 Cybersecurity — the security solutions implemented to protect the infrastructure and communications

📍 Demonstration site — the location where the project’s demonstration lighting column will be installed was presented

Seeing 17 months of work come to life in real-world demonstrations is always a memorable moment. SMARTLIGHT is halfway there — and the next steps look promising! 🚀
