Can pharmacist-led interventions improve outcomes for patients with diabetic foot ulcers and metabolic syndrome?
A prospective pilot study from a tertiary hospital in India highlights the potential benefits of pharmacist-led, multidisciplinary care for adults with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) and metabolic syndrome. Integrating medication reviews, biweekly counselling, lifestyle education and adverse drug reaction monitoring into routine care was both feasible and well accepted by patients. After six months, participants showed significant improvements in medication adherence, glycaemic control, blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels. More than half achieved complete ulcer healing, while 85.7% experienced at least a 50% reduction in wound size and 95.9% of ulcers remained stable. [Journal of Wound Management]
These findings highlight the important role pharmacists can play within multidisciplinary wound care teams, supporting better cardiometabolic management, treatment adherence and wound healing outcomes in high-risk patients. [Journal of Wound Management]
