2023 was a bittersweet year.

I was able to be in the Kendo national team for my second time and went and did all the team matches at the EKC 2023 for Portugal. I was able to be 3rd place in the European Naginata Championships, the first time Portugal was able to secure a place at the podium of the main competition. We had the first Naginata national championships in Portugal this year, too. My students were able to win a lot in the Naginata national championships, in the Kendo nationals too, both team and individuals, and we had people joining the dojo and staying.

So, in terms of results, we had a lot of good things going on in 2023.

One of the biggest ironies of this past year is that for many of these things I was much more ill prepared than previous times. I gained a lot of weight at the beginning of the year because I had injuries and a mental breakdown, which led me to go on medical leave at the end of 2022, through the beginning of 2023 and then again in August.

I've struggled a lot the past year to keep practicing, to keep teaching classes and to be able to practice for myself. I've failed a lot in all of those.

I've also quit being the ENF Treasurer because I couldn't spend the energy needed to keep up with the things that needed to be done.

I think that the only reason I was able to have some success last year was because I had/have the support of my wife and because I was able to maintain some calm and disconnect while fighting at the several competitions I had.

Teaching was sometimes difficult with work schedules, traffic to and from the dojo and maintaining any sort of schedule and training regime that made sense for me and my students, while dealing with mental breakdowns and medical leaves. It mostly worked out.

We had to stop Jukendo and Tankendo for now because I couldn't find a schedule for it.

I've started a new job at the end of the year and I've restarted my studies, this time in video games. I hope that will make me have a happier work life in the future where I don't actively hate my work and burnout every year from it.

Let's see how this year progresses.

I've had some very intense couple of weeks. My wedding ceremony was on September 3rd, then we spent the week traveling through Scotland for our honeymoon and after that I flew to Brussels for the European Naginata Championship.

At the ENC I acted as representative for Portugal at the General Assembly but also as ENF treasurer, then I competed in the individual men, goodwill dan and goodwill kata, I also acted as shinpan for the first time at an ENC, helped as manager for an engi team, helped find a manager for her, and I helped at the tables as soon as I was free from other duties!

All of that is to be expected. We should always give back to our community when we can.

As a competitor, the first day was not very good. Not because I lost but because I couldn't do my best and wasn't able do the things I know and I'm able to do. This is only related to my own performance. I'm not trying to detract from my opponents victories. They did very well and scored very good ippons on me!

During the goodwill dan I was able to fight more freely and I was able to employ my skills and the strategy my manager and sensei gave to me before the fight.

Goodwill kata I went with I did the uchi side because I'm still not super confident about my right knee after the injury I had. We live in different countries so we only practiced twice; once the day before and once right before the competition. During our second match we were able to get 1 out of the 3 flags from the shinpan! I also learned a lot while getting ready for the kata competition.

After the ENC I was able to meet up with Chris Maes, my kendo sensei and friend, and I even managed to squeeze in a Kendo practice at his dojo!

The next day I arrived at Portugal in the afternoon and I collapsed in bed recovering from all this!

Thanks to Marie-Luise from I was able to attend! She took my bogu to the championship and lent me the naginatas I needed for the championship! Sorry I broke so many ha-bu!

I also had a great time at the welcome party and with the friends I stayed over during those days!

ENF MAY NEWSLETTER

Dear Naginata friends,

This month I send Naginata power to French members

As summer approaches, events are multiplying in all disciplines. A few days ago the European Kendo Championships were held in Germany. A great gathering of European practitioners like the one our Federation is preparing for Brussels. Here is a preview of the competition poster. The Board is working hard on the preparation of these championships, as well as the Belgian Federation, so don't hesitate to send your questions.

France has just organized its national Naginata championships in Limoges and you will find in the link below the impressions of a practitioner. Germany has made beautiful demonstrations in Mainz and Japan is about to reopen its doors to tourists and therefore to all practitioners.

We remind you that the next General Assembly will be the occasion for a election of the Board: President, Vice-President, General Secretary, Treasurer and Technical Director. As the European Championships have been brought forward the date of the GA has been brought forward and therefore we expect your candidatures for the 1st of August 2022.

The first class of the day had no one besides myself so I spent some time practicing Iai basics.

I don't officially practice Iaido anymore but I keep doing it for myself, so I don't forget about the sword. It also helps me concentrate and let go of my mental clutter.

I filmed a lot of things that day for Naginata. That's going to be a whole different video, hopefully this week.

See you soon.
