YUK HUI é Professor da Universidade Erasmus, Roterdão (Cátedra Human Conditions) e da Universidade de Hong Kong. Estudou engenharia de computdores na Universidade de Hong Kong, obteve o seu Doutoramento em filosofia da técnica na Universidade de Goldsmith (UK) com Bernard Stiegler, e a sua Agregação na Universdiade de Leuphana (Alemanha)

Com uma obra profícua e interveniente, Yuk Hui é um dos pensadores mais relevantes da contemporaneidade, no campo da cultura, da técnologia, da epistemologia, da política e da arte. Em problemáticas como as do digital e da cibernética, da arte e da técnica, do sujeito político e da soberania, tem introduzido novos conceitos como os de cosmotécnica e tecnodiversidade ou da arte como revolução epistémica. Relançado na cultura contemporânea alguns dos debates e autores fundamentais do ocidente, tem-nos introduzido também a outras epistemologias e cosmologias não ocidentais.

📚A sua obra publicada inclui: On the Existence of Digital Objects (2016), The Question Concerning Technology in China. An Essay in Cosmotechnics (2016), Recursivity and Contingency (2019), Art and Cosmotechnics (2021) and Machine and Sovereignty (publicação prevista em 2024).

WORKSHOP DE INVESTIGAÇÃO

Este Workshop sobre o pensamento e obra de YUK HUI
decorre nos dias 19 e 22 abril e 3 maio das 16h00-18h00 na Sala SE1, Piso 0 (Colégio Almada Negreiros, Campus UNL Campolide).

O Workshop de investigação consistirá numa introdução ao pensamento de Yuk Hui com base numa oficina de leitura de textos fundamentais da sua obra, em preparação do encontro e conversa com o autor na Masterclass de 10 de maio.

O workshop oferece certificado de participação.

O evento é atividade é organizado pelo grupo de investigação Cultura, Mediação & Artes do ICNOVA.

In 2023, the first edition of the AHDT 2023 - Arts and Humanities in Digital Transition took place. On July 6th and 7th, numerous participants gathered at the Centro Cultural de Belém. We express our gratitude to all those in attendance and wish everyone a great new year.

On 7th July, during the The Art and Humanities in Digital Transition Conference 2023, which took place at the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon, Portugal, a special conversation with the theme: “Arts, Culture and Digital Ecology: What dialogue can artistic practices and institutions open with technology?” occurred. The discussion was mediated by Maria Teresa Cruz and Madalena Miranda and included participants Delfim Sardo, Manuel Damásio and Nuno Crespo.

In the face of a new technological shock driven by accessible media, digital networks and large data sets, marked by computational analysis, AI and automation, and leading to the algorithmic deciphering of the aesthetic subject –is there any sensitive intelligibility of the world outside calculability and prediction? What kind of experiences can art continue to open up? What practices, objects and bodies can critically challenge informational aesthetics? What kind of dialogue can artistic projects and institutions open with technology?

On July 6th, during the Art and Humanities in Digital Transition Conference 2023, which took place at the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon, Portugal, a special conversation with the theme 'Cognition, Thought, and Technology: What is knowing, thinking, and learning in the age of cybernetics?' occurred. The discussion was moderated by Maria Teresa Cruz and included participants Anna Ciaunica, José Bragança de Miranda, and Robert W. Clowes.

The current relationship between knowledge and technology is of crucial importance for the fate of contemporary societies. The new Information technologies and cooperation networks are enabling an unprecedented explosion of knowledge in the history of humankind, through the planetarization of digital infrastructures, the extensive extraction of data and the advances in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

However, automated decision-making and the "black box" effects along the circuits of knowledge formation, the mechanisms of surveillance and behavioral engineering of data science, and the sense of a "post-truth" era that runs through some contemporary information networks stand in stark contrast to the modern subject's ideals of rationality and self-determination.

The ability to shape an epistemology for the information age will determine whether there will still be a political economy for the digital techno-sphere or only cybernetics. What is knowing, thinking and learning in the age of cybernetics? And what is the role of the university concerning the new technologies of cognition?

On July 8th, during The Arts and Humanities in Digital Transition Conference (AH-DT 2023), Geert Lovink (Institute of Network Cultures) presented a lecture-performance titled "Extinction Act" as part of the conference program.

Extinction Internet is not merely an end-of-the-world phantasy of digital technology that one day will be wiped out by an electromagnetic pulse or the cutting of cables. Rather, Extinction Internet marks the end of an era of possibilities and speculations, when adaptation is no longer an option. During the internet’s Lost Decade, we’ve been rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic under the inspirational guidance of the consultancy class. What’s to be done to uphold the inevitable? We need tools that decolonize, redistribute value, conspire and organize. Join the platform exodus. It’s time for a strike on optimization. There is beauty in the breakdown.

The Art and Humanities in Digital Transition Conference 2023 took place on July 6-7 at the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon, Portugal. With over 80 participants divided among 28 panels, they had the opportunity to present their work, share their thoughts, and engage in discussions on the relationship between art, technology, digital humanities and culture.

One of the primary goals of this event was to establish a political cosmology and ecology for the digital transition, a fundamental epistemic, cultural, and creative task of the humanities and the arts in the XXI century. The conference was organized by the Institute of Communication of Nova University (ICNova) and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of Nova University of Lisbon.

The Arts and Humanities (AH-DT 2023) had the pleasure of presenting a conference by the philosopher Claire Bishop (City University of New York). The event took place on July 8th as part of the AH-DT program. In front of a large audience, after being introduced by the Curator Delfim Sardo, Bishop presented her talk titled "Os XXI: Disordered Attention."

Claire Bishop is an important and well-known figure in the field of Art and Digital. She is a professor of art history, is widely considered to be an original thinker and creative interpreter of contemporary art, as well as a dynamic teacher. Her 2002 Ph.D. from the University of Essex was published as Installation Art: A Critical History and quickly became an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the subject; her edited volume, Participation is also highly regarded.

Her book Artificial Hells: Participatory Art and the Politics of Spectatorship won the College Art Association’s 2013 Frank Jewett Mather Award for art criticism. Forthcoming projects include a short book on Merce Cunningham’s Events, and Disordered Attention, a collection of essays about contemporary art and performance since the 1990s. Her books and articles have been translated into twenty languages, and she is a Contributing Editor to Artforum. See her website on Academia.edu and online archive.

The Arts and Humanities (AH-DT 2023) had the pleasure of presenting a conference by the philosopher Yuk Hui (City University of Hong Kong). The event took place on July 7th as part of the AH-DT program. In front of a crowded audience, after being introduced by Maria Teresa Cruz (Chair of the Organizing Committee of AH-DT Conference and Coordinator of the Research Group in Culture, Media and Arts at ICNOVA), Hui presented his talk titled "Technodiversity and Democracy."

Hui is one of the most interesting contemporary thinkers. He studied Computer Engineering at the University of Hong Kong and Philosophy at Goldsmiths College in London where he wrote his doctoral thesis under the French philosopher Bernard Stiegler (1952-2020); he obtained his Habilitation (venia legendi in philosophy of technology) from Leuphana University Lüneburg.
He was a postdoctoral researcher at the Institut de Recherche et d’Innovation of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (2012) and a visiting scientist at the Deutsche Telekom Laboratories in Berlin (2013). Since 2010, he has been teaching in various institutes including Goldsmiths College, Leuphana University, Bauhaus University, Strelka Institute Moscow, Chinese Academy of Art, and City University of Hong Kong. Hui is a juror of the Berggruen Prize for Philosophy and Culture since 2020, and initiator of the Research Network for Philosophy and Technology since 2014.
