🌱🤖AI meets sustainability in the agri-food sector.
AcornSelectAI is an innovative Portuguese project, coordinated at IT by Hugo Proença, that combines artificial intelligence, computer vision, and multispectral imaging to improve the selection and valorization of acorns. By using deep learning and adaptive machine learning techniques, the system can identify defects invisible to the human eye, reducing waste and increasing raw material value.

Beyond technology, the project promotes the sustainable use of an underutilized natural resource, supports rural development, and contributes to the preservation of the Portuguese montado ecosystem.

A great example of how AI and research can drive innovation while creating environmental and economic impact.

🤖 Should there be limits to Artificial Intelligence?
Our researcher Mário Figueiredo, and one of the IT coordinators of NextGenAI (https://www.it.pt/Projects/Index/4830), joined SIC's "Expresso da Meia-Noite" to discuss the opportunities, challenges, and societal impact of AI.

As AI continues to transform our lives, the debate extends far beyond technology, raising important ethical and social questions. During the discussion, Mário Figueiredo highlighted a frequently overlooked issue: the exploitation of vulnerable workers within AI supply chains.

What do you think: how can we ensure that AI development remains aligned with human values and social responsibility?
