Yoga balancing poses are done on a flat surface, this is both feet on an unstable surface, constantly shifting, constantly recalibrating — building foot muscle strength and ankle stability that actually transfers into your everyday life.

You can buy this on Amazon, search “wobble cushion” and you’ll see different price ranges. It asks your feet and legs to make tiny micro adjustments the whole time, so a few minutes is good enough.

Here’s some starting tips:
✨ don’t over inflate the cushion
✨ be near a wall of table so you can stabilise yourself if need be
✨ look directly forwards
✨ let your arms be free, you’ll move them around a lot to begin with
✨ falling off is not a fail
✨ try not to hold your breath
✨ notice where you’re clenching and relax a little
✨ notice the moments of balance, it’s different to tree pose, there’s more internal awareness in my opinion.
✨ notice how you can’t think about anything else, great if your head is busy.

We know so much more these days what’ll help us stay living well into our older years, falling and breaking bones is hopefully not in my future if I do things like this.

If your shoulders have started rounding forwards, it’s not a coincidence if you do a lot of keyboard work, cooking, driving, gardening. The muscles across the chest quietly tighten over time and before long your posture and your breathing pay the price.

Most people try to fix this by pulling their arms behind their back. It helps a little but it doesn’t get into the tissue the way this does.
A myofascial ball like the ones from or even a tennis ball works ok. I’ve used an apple at a pinch before. Roll it slowly from the centre of your chest, just under your collarbone, all the way out to the shoulder. Apply gentle pressure. When you hit a tender spot, back off slightly and twist the ball, that grabbing motion gets into the tissues underneath and releases what stretching alone can’t reach.

Do both sides.

The after feel is a bit like a really good cobra pose — that same open, lifted sensation across the chest — except your arms haven’t had to hold you up to get there. Your shoulders move back and your chest opens and you breathe better.

Follow along if you want yoga tips backed by anatomy knowledge, not pretty shapes for the sake of it, but movement that helps your body with the aches, pains and changes that come with age.
