Aljezur International School - Escola Internacional de Aljezur

Taking place on Friday 3rd July, this year marks the 20th anniversary of our annual Play in the Parque and follows the same theme as 2006 - the classic Shakespeare tale with a twist or two! Set in the idyllic forest behind Barão de São João, this outdoor theatre performance is guaranteed to be fun for all the family. The bar and bbq begin at 4pm and the show starts at 6.30pm. We hope to see you there and all proceeds will go to the local bombeiros who saved our precious Parque de Merendas during the awful wildfire last September. We dedicate our performance to these heroes!

As part of their Geography studies, our Emerald (year 8) group recently went to Amoreira beach to conduct a survey. The purpose of this was to create a 3d map of the river bed which the students completed in class. They even managed to have a swim at the end of the day!

For the third year, we are in Rome with a group of students who are taking part in the Model United Nations conference. This year our students are delegates of Cuba and already making friends and alliances with peers from all round the world. Thank you to the MUN organisers for giving us this amazing opportunity.

It has been a magical day. Students, teachers, parents, cats and chickens were overjoyed to be back together again and we look forward to working with the Ministry of Education to resolve the situation so our school family never has to go through this again.

We are over the moon to announce that our recent unexpected closure by the Ministry of Education has been suspended by a judge and we go back to school tomorrow. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for all our parents who have worked so hard for this and to our whole school family who have shown endless support and patience for the last three weeks. Thank you and we are looking forward to getting back to normal.

A Juventude Socialista de Aljezur manifesta a sua solidariedade para com a comunidade educativa da Escola Internacional de Aljezur perante o encerramento compulsivo deste estabelecimento de ensino.
Este ato abrupto e desproporcionado representa um ataque à liberdade de escolha das famílias e ao direito à educação das crianças e jovens do nosso concelho.

Reafirmamos o nosso compromisso com a escola pública, que deve ser universal, gratuita e de qualidade. Contudo, acreditamos que diferentes ofertas educativas podem e devem coexistir, enriquecendo o nosso concelho e respondendo à diversidade de necessidades existentes.
A Escola Internacional de Aljezur tem desempenhado, desde 2010, um papel importante na vida educativa e cultural da comunidade.

É fundamental que o Estado invista na melhoria das escolas públicas, nomeadamente da Escola Básica Profª Piedade Matoso, mas também que reconheça o valor e o contributo de outras instituições de ensino que servem a população local. Educação é cooperação, não exclusão.

Apelamos a todos para que assinem a petição contra o encerramento da Escola Internacional de Aljezur, exigindo respeito, diálogo e uma solução que preserve a diversidade da oferta educativa local.

“Na sexta-feira, dia 24, por volta das 11:00, sem qualquer aviso prévio, entraram cinco militares da GNR a acompanhar uma representante da Inspeção-Geral da Educação e uma representante da Direção dos Serviços Regionais do Algarve e ordenaram o encerramento imediato da escola. (…) Argumentámos que não seria possível o encerramento imediato, até pelo superior interesse dos menores, porque muitos pais estariam a trabalhar e não tinham como vir buscar os seus filhos e outros vão para casa de autocarro, que não estava disponível no momento. Disseram que iam voltar ao final do dia para concretizar o encerramento da escola. Assim fizeram e ficaram a aguardar que os pais viessem recolher as crianças, que o autocarro viesse e levasse as restantes”, relata à CNN Portugal a diretora pedagógica do estabelecimento, Sílvia Catarino.

A escola, que segue o currículo de Cambridge (aceite pelo Ministério da Educação, Ciência e Inovação) está aberta há 15 anos e chegou a ser-lhe atribuída licença permanente de funcionamento, em 2014. Uma decisão que parece ter sido revertida anos depois, sem ter sido comunicado à direção do estabelecimento.

Massive congratulations to Saskia, Rory, Emily and Elektra for completing their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award practice journey. Despite the rain, they successfully reached the destination point on the west coast after a 2-day hike and learned a lot on the way. We are so incredibly proud of them and look forward to their successful completion of the final Adventurous Journey next month. Also a huge thank you to our colleague Lindsay who accompanied them and to Keeley and Rui who warmly welcomed them to camp on their land.
