Fishing4Ghosts is an upcycling project, aiming to raise awareness and reduce the amount of ghost gear It is no longer waste but a valuable resource.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

In the scope of Fishing4Ghosts stylish, high-quality products are hand-made out of the old fishing gear (in this initial phase we produce bracelets, keychains, and (sun-) glass straps). The materials are collected in different harbors in the Algarve, Portugal as well as during regular coastal clean-ups in the area. The collection is used to sensitize the fishermen as well as the

Introducing our art pieces (yes, we made two!) for The Trash Art Awards!

Our first art piece is a ghostly creation made from lost fishing gear. It's pretty spooky, isn't it? This art represents how scary ghostfishing is in our oceans. Whenever we clean up beaches, we find this gear all over the place.

Fishing4Ghosts, a startup dedicated to dealing with lost fishing gear, teamed up with CERES Int. Field Study Center Aljezur. Together, we worked with around 30 students from various European universities and 20 kids from Aljezur, all around 10 years old, to clean up 6 different beaches and cliffs and create these art pieces.

The fish symbolizes the ocean's beauty and its amazing creatures, while the ghost represents the lost fishing gear that's a huge problem along our coastlines and floating on the ocean's surface. Ghost gear is designed to catch these beautiful creatures, causing many unnecessary deaths. It's pretty spooky when you think about it!
We believe it's high time we reconsider our fish consumption and how we treat our oceans. 🌊🐟👻

🌊What Sets Us Apart?

We're not just another company, we're on a mission!

♻️The materials are collected in different harbors and during beach clean-ups in Portugal. The collection of the materials is used to sensitize the fishermen as well as the participants of the clean-ups for the issue.

10% of the profit is used to incentivize the fishermen to collaborate and bring the gear to our collection points.

Other companies donate part of their profit but don't have a direct positive impact themselves. We do both.

🌊 Our vision at is to reduce the suffering in the ocean significantly. We are aiming to contribute to a healthier ocean that provides a safe and beautiful home to all those fascinating creatures that live in it and are related to it (including us humans).

Tackling ghost gear pollution is one very important topic in that and as you know we are very dedicated to reduce the amount of gear entering the ocean through all our actions.

But there are other really pressuring issues that should be talked about as well. That’s why we decided to share information in the coming weeks about topics like bottom-trawling, bycatch, overfishing, the oceans role regarding our climate, noise pollution, deep sea mining etc. .

Of course we don’t loose our solution-oriented focus and will always share possible actions that can be done about each of the threads.

💡Do you have any wishes for topics we should share more information about? Can be about a particular ocean thread or a inspiring solution-focused project!

It’s not about cleaning up!

It’s about getting aware, getting active, getting together as a community for the ocean.

A great side effect of our clean-ups is that we leave the beaches much cleaner than we found them, but the ocean will bring now trash very quickly right after that.

Therefore, we focus on awareness raising as a central aspect of our mission of .

We are NOT an NGO and don’t rely on donations but on selling our products to be able to keep doing what we are doing for the ocean and all those wonderful creatures that live in it!

The more products we sell the more good we can do.

We appreciate your support!

“Ghostfishing” sounds spooky, right?

Well, it is spooky indeed. Lost nets or other fishing devices float though our oceans and keep fishing, without ever being retrieved. The dead animals in the “ghost gear” attract predators that are likely to get entangled as well. A vicious circle, indeed. :/

"I founded fishing4ghosts] out of my deep passion for marine conservation.

I realized that ghost gear is a pressuring, and underestimated global issue as I observe the huge impact in my daily life on the coast here in Portugal.

My observations are backed up by recent, global studies that are revealing how big the impact of ghostfishing really is.

I believe that education, reduced fish consumption and circular economies are key factors in combating ghostfishing.

With fishing4ghosts] I aim to bring the topic into the public eye as well as to the awareness of the fishing communities while upcycling the fishers waste." (Christina)

The fishermen’s trash becomes our treasure!

This is a picture taken in the harbor of beautiful Arrifana. It shows the gillnets that represent one of the most used fishing-gear, here in Portugal.

Those nets on the picture are no trash, yet. But probably one day soon and then they become your sunglass-straps or bracelets. ♻️
