Word of the Week: 17.10.22

JUXTAPOSE

Juxtapose is one of my favourite words - it's fun to say, but for me, it also makes me think of contrast, of clashing and of extremes being forced together, this could be experienced through all your senses too - visual, audible, scent, taste, touch and even feelings.

What two things juxtapose well for you - salty and sweet?

ICKY

An appropriate word for the 31st of October (Happy Halloween! 🎃). It makes me think of dripping, oozing or even rotting images from movies, and sometimes my compost bin.

What does the word 'icky' make you think of?

Word of the Week: 17.10.22

HALLOWEEN

OoooOooo...OOooo... 👻
Halloween - it's got bigger and bigger every year. When I was a kid we didn't really know about it. Trick or treating was an alien concept; dressing up, however was a daily activity: not just for Halloween. We had an amazing dressing-up box! My mum made me and my siblings so many outfits and costumes - she's now doing the same for her grandchildren. What a woman.

Word of the Week: 10.10.22

GOURD

I love a gourd or pumpkin, they grown in such a wide range of colours and shapes, not to mention a great flavour and ornamental too.

I had some 'volunteer' seedlings from the compost this year - I had no idea what they were going to be. They grew and grew and grew, then, eventually they fruited: hundreds of Butternut Squash! Thankfully they're 'winter squash' and will store well to be enjoyed through the cold months ahead.
Butternut squash soup anyone?

eager

I love the expression 'eager beaver' - we can use it to say when someone is very keen and excited about something. I wonder if any of the school children who went back to school last week were eager beavers: excited to start learning at school again, or maybe just see their friends?

double-decker

Double-decker buses are used a lot in the UK for busy routes. I always find a seat on the top deck when I travel on a double-decker: you get the best views!
Also there is a Cadburys chocolate bar called a Double-Decker - yum!

Have you ever seen the red buses from London?
Can I buy Double-Decker chocolate bars here in Portugal??
