*Amal Is Gone, but Her Schoolbag Remains:* _An Airstrike on Al-Mawasi Claims the Childhood of a Girl Whose Dream Was to Become a Doctor and Treat Children Wounded in the War_
In a modest displacement tent in Khan Younis, eight-year-old Amal Al-Mughair, a third-grade primary school student, spent the night dreaming of her little wishes, having packed her schoolbag in preparation for the new school year.
But an Israeli airstrike targeting displaced people’s tents in Al-Mawasi area shattered those simple dreams. Amal was murdered, and the scene turned into a heartbreaking farewell: a small white shroud lying beside a colorful schoolbag, a little girl gone before she could even rejoice at meeting her classmates.
Amid the sorrowful funeral scenes, her mother broke down in tears as she held the last belongings of her daughter and quietly said in grief: “She was smart and hardworking. We prepared her schoolbag, and she was so happy. She wanted to go to school.”
The mother added, as she looked at her departed child: “She wanted to learn and grow up to become a doctor, so she could build her future and treat the children and people who were injured in the war.”
Amal left behind an unopened schoolbag and a dream of healing wounds; a dream destroyed by the bombing in a matter of moments.
Amal was but one line in an ongoing story of pain. The children and students of Gaza have become direct victims of a war machine that is stealing their childhood and depriving them of their inherent right to life and education.
What is happening to these children is a cry to the silent conscience of the world and an urgent appeal to the free people of the world and international institutions: Stop the massacre of childhood and end these blatant violations of humanity by the occupation.
