• MERCEDITA •
Hacienda Mercedita was a sugarcane plantation founded in 1861 by Juan Serrallés Colón. He named the hacienda Mercedita after his wife, Mercedes Perez. • Sugarcane was one of Puerto Rico’s top exports, which led to the formation of la Porto Rican American Sugar Refinery which produced the brand Snow White for 50+ years. • The sugarcane from Hacienda Mercedita was also used for the production of Don Q rum in 1932. • The sugarcane industry began to decline in the 1940s/50s. The government attempted to restore the sugarcane industry in 1973, as the Land Authority acquired many of the island’s mills. Over the next two decades, the sugarcane industry decline continued. Mercedita officially closed in 1995, however, Don Q is still produced at the Serrallés Distillery, a short distance from the old sugarcane refinery. @ Central Mercedita
