Have any of my friends taken the train from Citavecchia cruise port in Italy into Rome? Last time we did a tour (full on Vatican) but this time doing it on our own. We are in port from 800 to 1030 at night so plenty of time. Still have not gone in the colosseum…. What else is a must do?

It seems like just the other day, I was at my high school pep rally on a Friday afternoon jamming to “Cum on feel the Noize” on the big speakers in the gym and getting ready for some WRHS football. And now Dancing with the Stars is doing a Hair Metal night and using this as the soundtrack. S**t I am old.

We are down to the last 2 weeks. Please make sure your child is completing the final assignments. Summer is a critical time and students often lose gains they have made all year because they stop reading. Visit the public library and bookstores over the summer to keep you child reading. I will also let every student take home one of my books to read over the summer.

The end of the school year makes it difficult to have meaningful instruction for so many reasons, all related to the amount of testing. Testing makes our schedules wonky, keeps valuable resources unavailable ( computers and the library) and creates nervous kids. This year, I decided with the help of my outstanding 8th graders to do something different ( and meaningful) by working on creative writing (the antithesis of testing). Since writing the first line is always so stressful, I decided to order fortune cookies for every student and then assign their fortune as the first line of their story. They loved this idea but...

The biggest concern when I told the students. ... “Can I eat the cookie?”

You have to love the middle school mind.

Next week we continue the FSA testing till the end of the year. Please make sure that your child is getting plenty of sleep and a good breakfast every day. While I hate the test mentality, it unfortunately is our reality. feed them, hug them, and unconditionally love them and give them all the tools to help them do the best they can. I hope everyone is reading and enjoying spring break. The writing test is next week but I know all of my students are prepared. I am relaxing this week in paradise!
