Charla: Intro a Geometría Algebraica y Maculay2: 27 líneas en una superficie cúbica

Abstract: Es bien conocido que la ecuación y = ax2 + bx + c describe una par´abola en el plano, que es c´oncava hacia arriba si a > 0, con un v´ertice en x = −b/(2a), entre otras propiedades geométricas. Solo con observar la ecuaci´on (´algebra) podemos identificar la figura que rep resenta y algunas de sus propiedades (geometría). Este es el tipo de relación que estudia la geometría algebraica, pero generalmente con polinomios m´as complejos y en más variables.
Un resultado sorprendente y ampliamente celebrado, publicado por Arthur Cayley en 1849, establece lo siguiente: considera una superficie cúbica, es decir, el conjunto de puntos en el espacio tridimensional que satisfacen un polinomio de grado 3. Salvo ciertos casos excepcionales, esta superficie contiene exactamente 27 líneas rectas.

En esta charla, se presentarán conceptos fundamentales de la geometría algebraica como dimensión, interseción y grado. Luego, utilizando el lenguaje de programación Macaulay2, realizaremos un cálculo explícito que demuestra la existencia de las 27 líneas rectas en una superficie cúbica.

Data science is one of the fastest-growing fields, with applications that impact every domain, from academia to government to industry. Success in data science requires a solid technical foundation in statistics, mathematics, and computer science.

In this talk, we will explore the essential steps students can take to develop the core skills needed to become data scientists, as well as the various career paths available for applying technical knowledge to real-world problems. To highlight the impact and significance of data science roles, we will discuss real-world initiatives that are transforming healthcare and the Military Health System.

Bio:
Dr. Jesus Caban is the Chief Data Scientist for the Program Executive Office, Defense Healthcare Management Systems (PEO DHMS). In this role, he provides oversight and strategic guidance for the data science portfolio, which develops and delivers robust information and data platforms to facilitate informed decision-making across the entire Military Health System. He oversees data science capabilities that support over 1,000 data analysts and researchers, manages patient registries, and leads the MHS Digital BioBank as an enterprise bioinformatics capability. He is committed to educating and training the next generation in informatics, AI/ML, and data science. He is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University, as well as at the Uniformed Services University (USUHS) Medical School.
