Newly surfaced emails reveal that Jeffrey Epstein was far closer to Bitcoin’s early ecosystem than previously known, with links to developers, major investors, politicians, and academic institutions shaping crypto’s foundations.
Here’s what the documents show:
• MIT funding: Epstein sent $850,000 to MIT between 2002–2017. Some of that money supported the MIT Digital Currency Initiative, which paid Bitcoin Core developers during a critical funding crisis.
• Developer access: Epstein visited MIT nine times, met staff privately, and was internally referred to as “Voldemort.” His name was reportedly concealed while senior officials approved the donations.
• Manhattan meeting: Emails reference a meeting at Epstein’s mansion with Brock Pierce (early Bitcoin investor, Tether co-founder) and Larry Summers, discussing Bitcoin long before it went mainstream.
• Steve Bannon emails: In 2018, Epstein asked Bannon about crypto taxes, coin transfers, and campaign finance rules. Bannon replied and connected him with FEC experts and crypto insiders.
• Early crypto research: Epstein’s Amazon logs show purchases of books on Bitcoin, Ethereum, blockchain, and negotiation strategy while he was rebuilding his network.
None of this proves Epstein controlled Bitcoin or its development.
But it does show he had unusual proximity to the people, money, and institutions shaping crypto’s early years, and that much of it remained hidden until now.
Transparency raises questions. And this is one many didn’t expect.
