Solar Manufacturing Internship for Leaders in Energy (SMILE) Program

Description
The Solar Manufacturing Internship for Leaders in Energy (SMILE) Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO). SMILE will provide an opportunity for students from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) to intern at SETO portfolio companies. Students will participate in professional development programming in addition to their core assignments, which will provide the opportunity to engage and learn about the development of innovative solar energy technologies. Appointments will be offered through the EERE Research Participation Program.
The internships will be held for up to 10-weeks during the 2025 summer with a tentative start date of June 2, 2025. Internships will be served on-site (remote appointments may be considered on a case-by-case basis). Potential host sites will include solar energy manufacturing small businesses and nonprofits located across the U.S.
Financial Support
Stipend: $850 per week for full-time participation based on 40 hours per week.
Housing Supplement: $150/week for participants will be provided, if eligible. Additionally, a housing stipend increase may be provided to offset high cost of living in certain locations.
Local Transportation: $30/week
Inbound/Outbound Transportation Allowance: Up to $1,200 for participants who relocate more than fifty miles, one way, from their assigned internship site to offset transportation expenses to/from the assigned internship site. If the participant travels by plane or train, ORISE will make travel arrangements and purchase the plane or train tickets.
You may be required to travel to Washington, DC for scheduled professional development activities. You will be allocated a travel/education allowance of up to $2,000 to cover those expenses.

Communication in space environments is challenging due to the extreme distances involved, signal propagation delays, and disrupted networks that lack end-to-end connectivity. Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) is a suite of communications protocols and algorithms that was designed by NASA to address these issues and to operate effectively in such environments, achieving reliable automated network communications for space missions by using the bundle protocol, which forms a store-and-forward overlay network.
The High-Rate Delay Tolerant Networking project at NASA Glenn Research Center is developing a high-speed implementation of DTN to enhance future space missions. This technology aims to support missions such as Artemis, LunaNet, Lunar Gateway, and upgrades to the International Space Station (ISS). In Summer of 2025, the HDTN project will focus on developing software features to meet the needs of future missions, while ensuring compliance with NASA’s flight software practices and standards.
Duties and responsibilities of the intern:
• Participating in the entire software lifecycle, which includes writing requirements, implementing new features,
writing design documentation, and conducting testing
• Utilizing specialized hardware to emulate complex space networking scenarios
• Working in a multi-organization team with team members of diverse technical backgrounds
• Actively seeking out assistance from other students, mentor(s), and other members of the DTN team when needed
• Demonstrating work to others at NASA through presentations and/or publications
Desired Qualifications:
• Proficiency in programming languages such as C++, JavaScript, and/or Python
• Adherence to software engineering practices
• Understanding of computer networking protocols
• Experience in developing and deploying test automation (CI/CD)

Program Description
1st year students enter the Biomedical Science Ph.D. program register for MEDS 6503: First Year Graduate Experience in Biomedical Science. This new year-long course encompasses the three required laboratory rotations as well as an initial exploration block during which students can learn more about all seven Areas of Concentration (AoCs):
Cell Biology
Genetics and Developmental Biology
Immunology
Molecular Biology and Biochemistry
Neuroscience
Skeletal Biology and Regeneration
Systems Biology
allowing them time to consider and select rotation labs.
This course gives students the opportunity to become familiar with ongoing research at UConn Health and obtain a sound academic foundation for future study. Many laboratories representing diverse scientific areas are available for graduate student research rotations and doctoral dissertation research. After the first year, each student selects a thesis laboratory and affiliates with one of the AoCs to develop competency in their desired scientific discipline.

Website Development for Flight Test Capability

Internships are educational hands-on opportunities that provide unique NASA-related research and operational experiences for educators and high school, undergraduate, and graduate students (age 16 and up). To learn more, visit https://intern.nasa.gov.
This student internship project will focus on developing a website and other digital content for a new NASA activity focusing on a flight test capability. The website will include: informative narratives and descriptions of the capability, interactive flowcharts describing processes, access to forms for engagement and communication, a library of components and descriptions, etc. The website should also be configured so that it can be rapidly and easily modified and updated. The student will work closely with the PI to create the website content that describes the activity, but is expected to creatively formulate and develop a user-friendly layout and interface. Students with experience designing and developing websites are strongly desired. Additional skills in Microsoft Sharepoint, Microsoft Power Automate, creativity, written and verbal communication, and teamwork are desired.
