Incoming Ph.D. students must meet the admission requirements of the graduate program in biomedical sciences at PHSU. programs, visit www.psm.edu/rise.

To apply to the PHSU RISE Program you must complete an application and submit all required documents to the Ph.D. program admissions office no later than April 15. RISE admission decisions will be made after students have been officially accepted into the Biomedical Sciences PhD program. For an application form and a complete list of admission requirements for the RISE and Ph.D.

We are proud to acknowledge the participation of our amazing trainees, Luinet Meléndez (3rd) year and Yadiel Rivera (4th year), in the 2025 AACR Runners for Research 5K Run/Walk 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️ held on Saturday, April 26, in Chicago, Illinois.

Luinet and Yadiel are currently attending the AACR Annual Meeting (April 25–30) in Chicago, where they will also be presenting their scientific research 🧬🧪.

Their involvement in this 5K highlights their dedication not only to advancing cancer science but also to supporting the mission beyond the conference halls.

By joining this inspiring event—bringing together AACR members, annual meeting attendees, and local runners—they contributed to a meaningful cause: advancing lifesaving cancer research 🎗️.

Shoutout to our amazing Director, Dr. Caroline Appleyard, and our awesome students for representing us at this year’s APS Summit, hosted by the American Physiological Society!

This event brings together researchers, educators, and students from all over to share exciting science and connect with the broader physiology community.

Dr. Appleyard, James Torres, Vivianka Ramos, Jonathan López, and Gabriela Ortiz will all be presenting their work in poster sessions—huge congrats to each of them! Stay tuned as we’ll be highlighting their presentations soon.

We’re proud to acknowledge our 2nd year G-RISE trainee, Dorca Marcano, who is currently presenting her poster titled “Evaluating the Role of Pre-Existing Immunity in Neutrophil Activation During Dengue Using In Vitro Models” at the VIII Pan American Dengue Research Network (Pan-Dengue Net) Meeting!

This prestigious event, taking place from April 21–24, 2025 at the InterContinental Medellin - Movich, an IHG Hotel in Medellin, Colombia, brings together leading experts in infectious diseases from across the Americas.

Dorca’s work contributes valuable insight into dengue research, and we’re excited to see her represent our program on an international stage!

We are thrilled to acknowledge our talented 2nd-year G-RISE trainee, Lourdes M. Caro, who is presenting her poster titled “Modeling Pulmonary Function Trends in Patients with HPS-1 Using Retrospective Data from Puerto Rico Community Clinics” at the 2025 HPS Network Conference.🎉📚

This milestone is a reflection of her hard work and dedication, guided by the mentorship of Dr. Marcos Ramos. She is currently presenting her poster at the Meeting of the Minds event, where doctors and researchers are coming together to advance the understanding of Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS).🧠💡
