In the streets of the 1920's United States, one can hear the swinging beat of jazz and the rhythmic clap of a lively audience as they listen, as they dance, as they struggle, as they survive. In the midst of this, a movement among writers was born: The Harlem Reinassance. Among these writers, one cannot help but notice the poet called Langston Hughes. A poet, a novelist, a traveler who saw, felt and wrote. His writings were meant to capture the real life of black individuals of the time - their hardships and their joys - without either romanticizing nor stereotyping them. His work reflected the African-American culture honestly and faithfully, for he lived, loved, laughed, danced and suffered the same way in his own flesh.

Therefore, besides taking inspiration from the black community striving in his era, Hughes writes from his own experiences and his own views of the time. Having to traveling constantly from his childhood up to his adulthood, Hughes' novels, poems and essays were influenced by the richness of his experiences of the different places he had been. Hughes lived in many different places like France, Mexico, West Africa, the Azores, the Canary Islands, Italy; and everywhere, he had worked in different things. Hughes uses this to his advantage and colors his words with all his experiences.

His humorous and earnest writing was spead widely in through the States, becoming one of the most read authors of his time.

Hughes' work has been recognized and was granted with awards like:
- Intercollegiate Poetry Award (1927)
- Guggenheim Fellowship (1935)
- Roseward Fellowship (1941)
- Anisfeld-Wolfe Award (1954)
- Springarn Medal (1960)
