Many people watching this match didn’t even realize what happened.
In just a few seconds, Mónica secured one of the fastest submissions of the entire tournament with a perfectly executed armbar.
What most people don’t see is the work behind moments like this.
Mónica is one of the most dedicated students at Renzo Gracie Ponce—not just in our Kids Program, but in our entire academy. She rarely misses training. In fact, just a couple weeks ago she told Coach Scott she would be out of town on Friday for a family trip. Later, she changed her mind and came to class anyway because she simply didn’t want to miss a training session.
Mónica wasn’t born with some special gift for Jiu-Jitsu. She’s not succeeding because she’s naturally talented. She’s succeeding because she shows up consistently, works hard, loves the process, and has an incredible support system behind her.
Her parents and grandparents make sure she gets to training, competitions, and every opportunity to improve. Mónica takes advantage of those opportunities every single day.
The lesson here isn’t about winning quickly.
It’s about what happens when dedication, consistency, family support, and a positive attitude come together over time.
We’re incredibly proud of you, Mónica. Keep showing up. Keep learning. Keep growing. The results are taking care of themselves. 💙🥋

This weekend, Team Renzo Gracie Ponce competed at the Caribbean Grappling Promotions BJJ Open in San Juan.
We brought 19 athletes to test themselves on the competition mats and came away with some incredible results:
🥈 2nd Place Best Kids Overall Team
🏅 8 Gold Medals
🥈 6 Silver Medals
🥉 4 Bronze Medals
More importantly, our team achieved the best win/loss ratio of any academy at the event, finishing with 22 wins and only 12 losses.
But medals and match records only tell part of the story.
We learned a tremendous amount. We experienced victories and defeats. We had opportunities to overcome adversity, manage emotions, and grow as athletes and as people.
Most importantly, our students represented our academy with character. We were humble in victory and humble in defeat.
A special thank you to all of the parents, family members, friends, teammates, and supporters who spent their day cheering us on. Many stayed with us until the very last match, and that support did not go unnoticed.
Thank you to Caribbean Grappling Promotions for providing a competitive yet controlled environment where athletes can safely test their Jiu-Jitsu against skilled opponents from across the island.
We are proud of what we accomplished, but we are even more excited about what we learned.
Today, it’s back to the academy.
Back to training.
Back to learning.
Back to improving.
We definitely leveled up this weekend, and we’ll come back even better next time.

We pause to honor and remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.
Renzo Gracie Ponce will be closed Monday, May 25 for Memorial Day, however we will hold an Open Mat at 11:00 am. All regular classes will resume Tuesday.
The best way we can honor their sacrifice is by living fully, appreciating our freedom, and never taking it for granted. 🇵🇷 🇺🇸 🙏
After a hard Jiu-Jitsu class, sometimes kids need a little brain break.
At Renzo Gracie Ponce, we take training seriously, but we also understand that children learn best when challenge, creativity, and fun all work together.
This game of “Sharks and Minnows” was actually designed by one of our young students. His idea was to use the circles to increase the difficulty of the game — if you stepped on a circle, you turned into a shark.
Not only was it a fun idea, but it also encouraged movement, awareness, reactions, and understanding space on the mats.
Moments like this remind us that while Jiu-Jitsu helps children develop discipline, confidence, and resilience… sometimes kids also just need the opportunity to laugh, move, and enjoy themselves after working hard.
That balance matters.

Congratulations to our student Nelson Negrón Muñiz for making the trip to Orlando, Florida to compete at the IBJJF Orlando Spring Open.
Nelson put together an outstanding performance, earning his place in the finals with one points victory and two submission victories along the way.
The finals match was highly competitive, and although a couple small mistakes ultimately cost him the match on points, the experience and performance were something to be proud of.
Nelson is the first student to begin his Jiu-Jitsu journey with us at Renzo Gracie Ponce and travel off the island to compete at this level. That represents not only personal growth, but also the continued development of our academy and team.
Competing at events like this takes courage, preparation, sacrifice, and a willingness to test yourself against tough opponents. We are extremely proud of Nelson and look forward to seeing his continued growth both on and off the mats.
The journey continues.

We had a special visitor join our Fundamentals class today from in Virginia Beach, VA.
This visit was especially meaningful because he trains under one of ’s original coaches. Moments like this are a reminder of how small the Jiu-Jitsu community really is and how far those connections can reach over time.
Thank you, , for taking the time to bring your boy down to train with us while visiting Puerto Rico. We appreciate you stopping by and sharing the mats with our team.
We hope you enjoy the rest of your vacation with family, good training, and good times.
