Imagine losing control of your car and waking up in the hospital paralyzed from the neck down. This is the story of Kristopher Boesen, who experienced a life-changing moment where his car spiraled out of control on a slippy road surface, slamming into a tree and lamp post. Doctors warned Kris’s pare...

Graduation ceremonies are over and amazing adventures are about to unfold to our graduate students from the MVTE. It is a time of celebration and excitement. Today we are dedicating our most recent graduates Jean Carlos Serrano. Click “see more” and learn more about Jean Carlos Serrano and his Journey in MVTE.
Our lab is ecstatic to recognize the accomplishment of Mechanical Engineer and formal ex-member of MVTE Jean Carlos Serrano. Due to his dedication & persistence through out the years at UPRM he placed himself in a pool of highly qualified students and finally got admitted into one of United States elite grad schools Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Jean is a Senior Researcher in our Molecular Virology & Tissue Engineering Laboratory, committed to biomedical research and prepared to carry on his professionalism. His project, titled " Expression of Focal Adhesions in Response to Cyclic Loading of Substrate in MCF12A cells” was centered in mechanotransduction, which involves the conversion of extracellular physical forces into intracellular biochemical signaling. His extensive knowledge and dedication gave him the opportunity to present his project at international conferences and participate in summer programs at Harvard & Princeton. Jean Carlos Serrano we are proud of your amazing ex*****on and wish you the best in this new journey.

Jean Serrano Interview , Q&A:
Name, Age and Concentration:
Jean Carlos Serrano, 23 yrs., Mechanical Engineering
What was your experience at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez:
UPRM provided me with an excellent academic environment that constantly challenged and developed my intellectual abilities. Between the comprehensive courses and exceptional faculty, UPRM embraces and creates academic excellence.
When did you decided to join the MVTE team and why:
I decided to join the MVTE during the Spring of 2014. I was previously working with Professor Paul Sundaram in a computational bioengineering project but I mentioned to him that I was interested in conducting more experimental based research. He recommended me to visit the lab during a cell culture workshop and after my first day working with live mammalian cells, I was very enthusiastic and convinced that I wanted to pursue additional research in the MVTE team.
A brief explanation of your project.
In addition to various biological and chemical factors, cancerogenesis is also greatly influenced by mechanical stimuli. Unfortunately, our understanding of how different mechanical parameters influence the initiation and progression of cancer is very limited. Therefore, our research was oriented towards understanding the influence of stiffness and mechanical loading in the biological environment of cancerous cells.
How did joining MVTE helped you in your professional career and decision making?
The MVTE lab provided me with a truly interdisciplinary environment (working along biologist, chemist, engineers) to broaden my research interest and develop my skills and knowledge as a biomedical researcher. I sincerely believe that MVTE provided me with the best research environment to become a competitive student and researcher, and ultimately allowing me to pursue top-notch graduate schools.

MVTE is glad to recognize the success of Mechanical Engineer Paola Richiez, recently graduated and admitted into prestigious University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus. Paola is a Senior Researcher in our Molecular Virology & Tissue Engineering Laboratory, committed to biomedical research. Her project, titled "Ovine Model to Study Osseointegration of Gamma Titanium Aluminide", involved aspects of mechanical engineering, molecular biology, and medicine. Former engineer Richiez was able to present her project at international conferences and collaborate in our laboratory. Our best wishes in your career. We are proud to have been part of your academic platform during the past years at UPRM.
