🌊 New Report Shows Path Forward for Delivering on Marine 30x30 Commitments.
At the 11th Our Ocean Conference in Kenya, the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute released a landmark new report Closing the Implementation Gap: Capacity Development for Effective Marine 30x30 with a clear message: protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030 will not succeed through political announcements and civil society commitments alone.
🔵 Designated marine protected areas now cover 9.8% of the global ocean — yet at least half of existing MPAs remain unimplemented or operationally ineffective. A full 20% of ocean area still needs to be protected to meet the 30x30 target — and those areas must also be effectively managed.
❗ The next four years are critical. But cautious optimism is warranted: local organizations, Indigenous leaders, and community initiatives are already showing what effective marine conservation looks like when capacity development and sharing is prioritized from the outset.

Ocean conservation is severely underfunded. At the Our Ocean conference, leaders inside and outside of government can explore ways to finance the protection of marine life, and people who rely on it, deserve. https://pewtrsts.org/4e8RZW0

"Many restoration projects fail because they overlook the ecological processes that allow mangrove ecosystems to establish and thrive naturally."
In case you missed it: our Restoration Program Director, Laura Michie, recently wrote for the Global Mangrove Alliance on why mass planting isn't restoration - and what works instead.
🚩 The piece walks through the mistakes we see most commonly in the field: wrong site, wrong species, ambitious targets over ecological understanding.
✅ And the alternatives: Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration.
Laura weaves in real examples from El Salvador and Kenya, showing what happens when you restore hydrology first and let nature do the rest.
As global restoration commitments continue to expand (and we hope they continue to), let’s make sure they're based on proven methods.
