This is a perfect title to highlight during Women’s History Month as it shows how womanhood cannot be confined to one thing. It is expressed in a countless number of ways (all of which are valid). It shows how we often question how are we supposed to act, what are we allowed to hope for, what should we expect from the men in our lives, and how those answers are often found in our relationships with other women! It’s also set an Africa which adds a different cultural perspective! This was an easy read while I was honeymooning in PR!

First post of and it’s highlighting what else but our magic! In this book, Chad Sanders, interviews high profile affluent black people on how their experiences growing up black in America has equipped them to be successful in their respective fields. We sometimes find it difficult to bring our full selves to our professional lives, but this book shows us how not only is it ok, but it’s often the competitive advantage that can move us forward! Love a fresh perspective!

P.S. we highlight black books ALL year long, but this month especially!

Sunday dinner anyone??

I’m cooking braised lamb shanks in a peanut sauce using a recipe from Toni Tipton’s “Jubilee”, a collection of recipes from African Americans spanning over 200 years. Going through this book really makes me feel like I’m a part something when I remember how rich African American culture is.

Started and finished this book on the way to Savannah this weekend. The description was a little more salacious than the actual story, but was a good way to pass 4 hours of sitting still. Set in Accra, it centers around a young seamstress with a humble background, who is asked to marry a “Big Man” in an effort to pry him away from a controlling woman his family can’t stand. This marriage means a whole new way of life for her and her family, so the pressure to be a good wife is overwhelming. As things unfold, it becomes clear that your title is not always your position.

My son’s favorite thing is when we read to him. I think it’s because he has our undivided attention. He learned the word “Afro” from this book, and now he points them out every time he sees one 🤣🤣. What I liked about this book is that it was a hair journey told from the Dad’s perspective! Make sure your children can see themselves in all the things they consume!

I was so taken by “The Poet X” (see previous post) that I went and bought all of Acevedo’s work to binge read! Haven’t done this since I read “Americanah” and had the immediate need to read EVERYTHING Adiche. This book was really good, but a smidge below “The Poet X” because it didn’t feel as original. I’ve seen this story before in Tayari’s “Silver Sparrow”. A bigot father, with 2 daughters who either don’t know about one another or never cross paths. The nuance here is the Dominican immigrant lense and the father not being around to witness or mitigate the fallout.

The story is told from both daughters perspective. Each of them have a close relationship with their father in very different ways; as he is, in some ways, a different person with each of them. I feel pity for the girls throughout the entire book because they don’t get the chance to fully mourn their father’s death (not a spoiler...it’s in the blurb 😉) because they are dealing with the discovery of one another.

Super relatable characters. Very well written, AND I’m still geeked to read ALL of Acevedo’s work!
