BecaMMP empowers students through educational access, dedicated mentorship, and strong community support. Beca Estudiantil María Mercedes Pagán (BecaMMP) is a nonprofit scholarship initiative founded in 2013 in honor of María Mercedes Pagán—a woman of deep humility, fierce resilience, and unwavering belief in the transformative power of education. Born in Ponce and raised in Juana Díaz, Puerto Ric
o, María Mercedes dedicated her life to raising strong, community-oriented youth despite economic hardship. BecaMMP continues that legacy by awarding scholarships to deserving students in her native Puerto Rico, focusing on those who demonstrate academic potential, personal integrity, and financial need. What began as a local initiative to honor a matriarch has grown into a movement for educational equity, youth empowerment, and community upliftment. Our programs are designed to break generational barriers, especially for families who’ve historically lacked access to higher education. We believe every student should have a shot—regardless of zip code or income. Why BecaMMP Matters? Education is more than a degree—it’s dignity, opportunity, and agency. Through culturally grounded support and intentional giving, BecaMMP creates a path for youth to lead, build, and thrive. Rooted in María Mercedes' hometown, Juana Diaz, BecaMMP now supports students throughout the island. We remain small by design—locally led, personally invested, and always accountable to the families we serve.
