Did you know that your hand position can change how much resistance you feel in the water? 💧

Try the same arm press at the same speed using these four hand positions:

✋ Open palm: More surface area creates more resistance.

✊ Closed fist: Less surface area creates less resistance.

🤚 Fingers together: Creates a firm, steady surface against the water.

🖐️ Fingers spread wide: Allows more water to move through the gaps.

You can use these small changes to increase or decrease the challenge, without changing the entire exercise.

Tone Your Core: Lower Abs in Water 💪💦

You don’t need to lie on the floor to challenge your core!

In the pool, your lower abdominals and deep core help steady your hips, support your posture, and control your movements against the water’s natural resistance.

Three exercises that put them to work:

💦 Floating Flutter Kicks
💦 Tuck Jumps
💦 Hydro Core Crunches

Move with control, keep your core engaged, and let the water provide the challenge.

Is your water workout starting to feel easier? That may be a sign that you are ready for a new challenge! 💦

Small changes can make a big difference:
💪 Cup your hands to increase resistance for your arms.
🦵 Lift your knees higher to challenge your legs and core.
🌊 Add arm movements while stepping to engage more muscles.
⚡ Move slightly faster while staying in control.
🧘 Release the pool wall when you feel steady to challenge your balance.

You do not need to change everything at once. Start with one adjustment and progress at a pace that feels right for you.

Floating Flutter Kicks can be adjusted to meet you where you are in the water. 💦

Start at the wall and a pool noodle with the Basic version and gradually progress removing the noodle completely in Advanced.

The goal is not to rush ahead, it is to choose the version that helps you feel controlled, supported, and ready to move.

Which level would you try first: Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced?

Why should you press in both directions during a water exercise? 💧

Water creates resistance whichever direction you move, but you have to press deliberately against it.

Try it with a Chest Fly:

Press your arms inward to work your chest. Then actively press your arms apart to engage your upper back and the backs of your shoulders.

The key is not to relax during the return. Use your hands to press against the water and control both directions.

Tone Your Glutes: Glute Max, Med & Min 💪💦

When we talk about the glutes, we are actually talking about a group of muscles that perform different jobs.

Your glute max helps move your leg backward and generate lower-body power. Your glute med and min help move your leg outward and keep your hips steady.

Three pool exercises that engage these muscles are:

💦 Backward Hydro Kicks
💦 Lateral Leg Raises
💦 Explosive Core Kicks

Keep your upper body steady and move with control so your muscles work against the water’s natural resistance.

Deep-water aerobics can be a fun way to add variety to your pool routine, but it feels very different from exercising with your feet on the pool floor. 💦

In deep water, a properly fitted flotation belt or vest helps support you while your core, hips, and back work to keep your body upright and controlled. You can try movements like jogging, bicycling, cross-country skiing, knee tucks, and suspended jacks without repeatedly touching the pool floor.

That said, deep water is not automatically “better” or necessary for a great workout. Shallow-water exercise is an excellent option for building strength, balance, confidence, and comfort with water movement.

The best place to begin is wherever you feel safe, supported, and ready to move.

If you are new to deep-water exercise, stay close to the pool wall, use proper flotation equipment, and make sure the pool is supervised.
