The first Jews came to America in the 17th century, searching for religious freedom and a place where they could safely be themselves. Later, Jews fled to America to escape organized massacres, called pogroms, targeting them in Eastern Europe and Russia. However, the promise of religious tolerance in America didn’t protect the Jewish community from discrimination and violence. Jews faced – and continue to face – rising antisemitism. Today, Jews are the primary targets of all religious-based hate crimes, according to the FBI.
This month, let’s remember the promise of America that brought so many Jews to its shores and reflect on the contributions and diversity that Jewish people have made to the American experience.

Un día como HOY (hace 111 años) nació en SANTURCE (San Juan de Puerto Rico) la MegaEstrella del teatro y del cine JOSÉ FERRER, bautizado JOSÉ VICENTE FERRER DE OTERO Y CINTRÓN.
— hablaba 5 idiomas: español, inglés, francés, italiano y alemán.
— hizo su debut en BROADWAY en 1935 a los 23 AÑOS y ya a los 28 estaba protagonizando en la meca del teatro.
— hoy existen excelentes actores hispanos que interpretan las obras de William Shakespeare con mucho éxito, pero el primer actor hispano que fue ESTRELLA en ese selecto mundo, fue JOSÉ FERRER, se consagró en 1943 con “OTELLO”, a los 31 años.
— fue el Primer Hispano (y Latino) en ganar el Premio TONY (equivalente al “Oscar” del Teatro) como Mejor Actor, en la Primera Entrega de los TONY.
El actor puertorriqueño JOSÉ FERRER es el PRIMER Y ÚNICO ACTOR HISPANO que hasta hoy ha ganado el ÓSCAR en la Categoría de MEJOR ACTOR, es algo realmente grande, pero ¿sabe por qué? … por la época en que lo ganó, en un país donde existían unos profundos conflictos raciales y políticos.
¿POR QUÉ NUNCA NOS DICEN QUE JOSÉ FERRER ...
— fue un gran luchador en contra de la SEGREGACIÓN RACIAL, protestaba y denunciaba ABIERTA y PÚBLICAMENTE, exigiendo derechos y respeto a todo ciudadano por igual?
— impulsó la lucha para que los actores (todos unidos) RECHAZARAN participar en cualquier obra donde se SEGREGARA al público? (el mensaje (¡en esa época!) era, si al público nos los dividen por color de piel o nacionalidad en los teatros NO HABRÁ FUNCIÓN … una amenaza así mueve muchos intereses)
— fue valiente, fue atrevido, fue arriesgado luchando como león contra cualquier injusticia a los HISPANOS y LATINOS en los Estados Unidos; sobre todo contra sus ACTORES y ARTISTAS?
— fue perseguido por el Comité de Actividades Antinorteamericanas del corrupto y ra***ta legislador Joseph McCarthy que “veía” y etiquetaba a todos de “comunistas”, sobre todo a los grandes luchadores por los derechos civiles?
En una época en que muchos actores hispanos se cambiaban sus nombres originales por uno en inglés para “triunfar”, el boricua triunfó llevando su verdadero nombre con orgullo.
