Congratulations to Dr. Yamixa Delgado - Update [IME, Volume 5 (2026)] Cover for Issue

Congratulations on the selection of an original figure from the multi-institutional Perspective titled “Critical Alliance of AI in Education: A Pedagogical Framework for Safeguarding Cognitive Skills” as the cover page for the International Medical Education, Volume 5, Issue 1, 2026 March - 33 articles

Cover Story: Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming medical and scientific education, offering unprecedented opportunities to enhance learning, efficiency, and access to information. However, excessive reliance on AI tools may promote cognitive offloading, weakening the reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making skills essential for scientific inquiry and clinical practice. To address this challenge, we propose the critical alliance framework, a pedagogical model that shifts learners from passive AI consumption to active, critical engagement. Grounded in epistemic vigilance, adaptive practice, and intellectual ownership, the framework aims to help learners harness AI’s benefits while preserving the cognitive independence and professional judgment required for high-stakes decision-making.

Our congratulations to Dr. Yamixa Delgado and the team of co-authors, Dr. Marcos J. Ramos-Benitez (PHSU) and Dr. Martha E. García-Osorio (UCC), on this recognition and the selection of one of their figures.

The cover is online now.

Ours keep shining!

We are pleased to share the publication of the article titled “Cumulative Risk Profiles and Comorbidity Burden Among Men with Oropharyngeal Cancer: A Cohort Analysis from the All of Us Research Program,” published in Trends in Public Health. (See attachment)

This publication is the result of work conducted during the Summer Research 2025 Program under the mentorship of Dr. Grisel Burgos-Barreto, with our student Christina Ortiz Tavarez from San Juan Bautista School of Medicine, in collaboration with Daniel Reyes, a fourth-year medical student from the University of Arizona College of Medicine–Phoenix.

The study examines cumulative risk profiles and comorbidity burden among men with oropharyngeal cancer using data from the All of Us Research Program. The findings highlight the importance of integrating clinical, biological, and social determinants to better understand patterns of risk, health disparities, and the need for more comprehensive prevention and care strategies.

This achievement reflects SJBSM’s commitment to student research, academic mentorship, interinstitutional collaboration, and the development of future health professionals with strong competencies in population health, epidemiology, and public health research.

Congratulations to Dr. Grisel Burgos-Barreto and co-authors. We wish them continued success in their research initiatives.
