Having taught Leave No Trace Principles for over a decade I consistently see the confusion between theory and application come up in the most rigid fashion. A good trainer encourages you to think, to consider all sides and potential impacts of a choice and then allows you to make your choices accordingly. All too often people will quote an example action of a single principle of LNT and belabor the point without approaching the individual seeing them as an equal and making choices from their own ethical understandings. Ultimately we may not all agree about how to recreate ethically in the outdoors, but at the core of understanding is respect, and when we find such common ground we can make great strides in enjoying and protecting the outdoors. If you are interested in a leave no trace workshop for individuals or organizations we’d be happy to assist you!

Can you spot the baby box fish?
Easily one of my favorite species to observe in their juvenile state! They’re overpowered by micro currents but always seem capable of navigating smoothly away from the obstacles they’re propelled towards utilizing minimal effort and working with the slack in the same currents. There are always lessons to learn from our environment, we only need to be open to the teachings.

Every dive is unique. Whether it’s the first time or the 1000th time there’s an ever changing ecoscape lending it’s self to new discoveries! Today what started as an admiration of sponges turned into an appreciation of a rare short nosed batfish! An oddity in the world of fish it prefers to walk along the bottom on its fins, an evolutionary trait it gained without leaving and returning to the water!

This was the view on my drive after having lunch with my first dive “clients” as an instructor. I had to pull over and stop to soak in the moment! We did two single tank dives at Crash Boat beach in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. The conditions were the best they had been between storms and we were able to make the dive happen! There were LOADS of fish. Fun fact; limited visibility means both predators and prey can utilize the concealment and that results in a higher number of fish and higher variety of fish more often then not. Personally I love the challenge of Night/Limited Visibility dives and I think it’s an under appreciated environment to explore and appreciate! Certainly provides more diving opportunities if you learn to appreciate what you have and dive all conditions you are competent enough to!

Our logo is finished! It was inspired by an interaction I had with a baby octopus at ! Very memorable experience of finding a baby octopus in a soda can I picked up off the bottom of the sea. It was a great reminder of mindfulness while doing beach cleanups!
