Going through ancestry records on familysearch.org (a free site) has been extremely illuminating for me. The lead picture of the persimmons on this page was taken in Bassano del Grappa. Over the years, I met people who were nostalgic for their years under communism, World War II, the Depression, their salad days, their time in the hospital... not for the death or feeling of lack but for the youth, drive, sense of purpose, community, etc. There are some opportunities in challenging times.
