🧠 Nikolai Bernstein was a Soviet neurophysiologist who was a pioneer 🚀 in the development of motion tracking 🕹️ and analysis devices 🖥️.
The number of muscles 💪 and joints required to coordinate our movements (punching 👊, throwing 🤾, running 🏃♂️, and jumping 🦘) was Bernstein's area of interest. He wondered: How many body parts, muscles and joints do we have? How are they involved and what are their positions during movement 🤔?
From his research we know that there are many ways a person can move to achieve a goal 🎯: this is called the problem of degrees of freedom. However, from the beginning to the end of the movement, the person needs to control 🕹️ and organize the body in one or more planes (i.e. solve the problem of degrees of freedom / the abundance of movements). When this is achieved, it is called coordination 🤹♀️.
Smith's painting 🎨 and Bernstein's work on the problem of degrees of freedom led to the understanding that there is movement variability in the normal fluctuations that occur in the performance of motor activities over many repetitions of a task. If a person tries to repeat the same movement twice, the two actions will never be identical because each repetition involves a unique movement pattern 🌀. Bernstein referred to this as "repetition without repetition" 🔁.
For us, this means that there is NO TRUE, IDEAL, ONLY ONE MOVEMENT PATTERN 💡.
