Polish with ALIA School

This weekend was the summer solstice, the longest day of the year and one of my favorite celebrations. In Slavic tradition, this time is known as Kupala Night.

I spent it in Sobótka, near Mount Ślęża, a mountain that was considered sacred by the pagan Slavs. This time I was there as an exhibitor at a local handicraft fair.

Besides selling my Polish learning book, I brought something many people probably don’t know I make: tiny gardens in old light bulbs! 😊 They didn’t sell as well as I had hoped, but I still had a wonderful day talking to people and enjoying the atmosphere of the festival.

My sister did much better with her beautiful crochet creations (and her Swedish learning book! I higly recommend it! .swatek 😊), and many family members helped us prepare everything we needed for the event. I’m very grateful for their support.

Despite the heat, it was great to be back in Sobótka. I have a real soft spot for this place.

When everyone else is reaching for fancy matcha whisks, I’m sticking with my trusty MOŹDZIERZ (a nice Polish word, huh?😀 It is a mortar and pestle: a bowl and club-shaped tool used to grind ingredients). 😄

Also, a quick reminder: one place has just become available in my online Polish group for adult Slavic-language speakers. Classes will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5 PM.

Answer to the question: what am I doing today after my Polish class?
I’ll be taking care of a carrier pigeon that landed on my balcony while escaping from a kestrel that was attacking it. Luckily, I hadn’t had a chance to put away my bird feeder after the winter yet — and that’s exactly where the pigeon took shelter.

This is actually the third time in my life I’ve had a carrier pigeon in my apartment. From previous contact with their owners, I know that the best thing to do is let them rest, give them some food and water, and wait until they’re ready to fly off on their own.

So for now, we’re waiting together. The pigeon is staying inside, because tonight is going to be cold. :)
