🤝 The Institute of International and Security Studies welcomed Professor Jozef Ristvej and Associate Professor Jozef Kubás from the Žilinská univerzita v Žiline (University of Žilina, Slovakia). Dr hab. Marek Musioł and Dr Marek Kulczycki represented ISMB UWr during the meeting.

📌 The meeting focused on strengthening research and institutional cooperation. The participants discussed further steps towards finalising a memorandum of cooperation between ISMB UWr and UNIZA and agreed on a visit by ISMB representatives to Žilina in May 2027.

📚 The meeting also provided an opportunity to review previous joint activities, including the international publishing project “The Palgrave Lexicon of Security in the 21st Century”, and to discuss future publications and new research projects.

💻 One particularly promising area of cooperation is the application of analytical and simulation models, decision-support systems and artificial intelligence developed at UNIZA to crisis management.

🇨🇦 🇵🇱 On 24 September 2026, the Institute of International and Security Studies at the University of Wrocław hosted an open lecture by Prof. Robert Huish from Dalhousie University, Associate Dean of Research at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

🎓 The lecture, entitled “Making Sanctions Great Again: Security in a Disrupted International Order”, focused on the effectiveness of economic sanctions and the ways in which they are circumvented in an increasingly complex and fragmented international system. Prof. Huish discussed, among others, the cases of Russia, Iran and Cuba, highlighting the role of financial intermediaries, offshore structures, the concealment of beneficial ownership, alternative transport and payment networks, and the so-called shadow fleet.

🌍 The event also provided an opportunity to discuss the political, economic and humanitarian consequences of sanctions, as well as the challenges involved in designing and enforcing sanctions regimes.

🔎 Prof. Huish’s visit was organised as part of a short-term research visit supported by the Excellence Initiative – Research University programme at the University of Wrocław. The event also marked another step in the developing cooperation between the University of Wrocław and Dalhousie University.

I🇺🇸🎓n June 2026, the Institute of International and Security Studies at the University of Wrocław hosted two representatives of Columbia University in New York: Prof. Dianne A. Williams and Susan Levin.

🌍 As part of the Visiting Professors programme under the IDUB project, two public lectures and seminars were held, focusing on contemporary challenges related to justice, conflict, change, and the management of social tensions. 🌍💬

📌 On 10 June, Prof. Dianne A. Williams delivered a lecture entitled “Decolonizing Justice: Beyond Western Frameworks”. The seminar addressed the decolonisation of justice systems, epistemic sovereignty, and alternative frameworks of social responsibility. The event created an important space for discussion on structural inequalities, the legacy of colonialism, and the critical analysis of social and legal institutions.

📌 On 16 June, Susan Levin led a public lecture and seminar entitled “A Neuroscience Approach to Change Management Through the Lens of Conflict”. The meeting focused on how insights from neuroscience can help us better understand resistance to change, conflict dynamics, emotional responses, and decision-making processes under stress, uncertainty, and pressure.

🌐Together, the two events demonstrated how interdisciplinary approaches to conflict, justice, and change can enrich academic reflection on security, communication, leadership, crisis management, and international relations.

🤝 The visits also marked another important stage in the growing academic cooperation between the Institute of International and Security Studies and Columbia University, covering areas such as restorative justice, decolonisation, conflict resolution, neuroscience and conflict, peacebuilding, climate change adaptation, diplomacy, and global governance.

🧠 On June 16, we will host Susan Levin, lecturer in the Negotiation and Conflict Resolution program at the School of Professional Studies, Columbia University, New York!

During her open lecture and seminar, Susan Levin will explore a neuroscience approach to navigating change and conflict: why people and organisations so often respond to change with resistance, fear, or escalating tension, and how an understanding of the brain can help us make sense of these dynamics.

📚🏛️Third-year students of the International Relations – Global Studies programme visited the Centrum Historii Zajezdnia today as part of the International Cultural Relations course, which explores the concept of European Capitals of Culture.

Wrocław, which held the title of European Capital of Culture 2016, provides a compelling example of a city that has built its identity through culture, dialogue, and historical memory. During the visit, students explored the exhibition “Wrocław 1946–2016”, which presents the city's post-war history, the reconstruction of its identity, and the social and cultural transformations that have shaped Wrocław over the past decades.

The exhibition offered valuable insights into contemporary Wrocław as a multicultural city shaped by migration, resettlement, and encounters among diverse traditions. Particular attention was devoted to issues of memory politics and the ways in which the difficult history of the city and its inhabitants is commemorated.

The visit provided an important opportunity to reflect on the role of culture in building European identity, fostering intercultural dialogue, and shaping contemporary narratives of memory.

🎨✨ We invite you to see the painting “Życie Kolorów – Life of Colors” by Alejandro Lara Gutierrez, donated to the Institute of International and Security Studies as part of the first edition of WrocArt 2026 – the Student Artistic Initiative of the University of Wroclaw.

🖼️ The artwork has been placed in a public space accessible to students and staff, becoming part of the permanent exhibition of contemporary student art on our campus. The painting can be viewed on the second floor of the building at Koszarowa 3 Street (near room 218).

🎭 The WrocArt project aims to promote students’ artistic creativity and integrate art into the university space, creating an environment open to diversity, creativity, and dialogue, organised by: Równi w Różnorodności - Equal in Diversity

🌍 On 21 May 2026, the Institute of International and Security Studies at the University of Wrocław hosted a guest lecture by Prof. Ben Orlove from Columbia University entitled “Adaptation to Climate Change: Perspectives from Mountain Villages and International Organisations.”

Prof. Orlove discussed the impacts of climate change, the experiences of mountain communities, and the role of international organisations in climate adaptation.

The lecture became an opportunity to reflect on contemporary climate challenges and the importance of cooperation between local and international levels of governance.

⚽ On 18 May, the English-language teams representing the University of Wroclaw and the Uniwersytet Medyczny im. Piastów Śląskich we Wrocławiu played a friendly football match. Our Institute was also represented on the pitch, as Dr Wojciech Szczerbowicz played for the UWr team!

👏 Congratulations on the great sporting spirit and the fantastic atmosphere surrounding the event!
