⛵🌌 AstroGeoBaltica 2026 ✨

This year, our PhD student Paulina Góra from the Astronomical Institute of the University of Wrocław took part in the AstroGeoBaltica 2026 expedition aboard the sailing ship Generał Zaruski.

The voyage took the participants through Finland, the Åland Islands, and Sweden, combining sailing with education and field research. Along the way, the group visited several fascinating geological sites, including the Lumparn impact structure, the Dellen impact crater, and the Skuleberget and Celsius Rock area. 🌍☄️

And, of course, there was astronomy too! 🔭 During the voyage, Paulina gave two astronomy lectures:

🪐 “Exoplanets – what are they and how do we discover them?”

⭐ “Around which stars do exoplanets form?” – focusing on the properties of stars and planetary systems, as well as the factors that determine the habitable zone and its potential to support conditions suitable for liquid water.

The expedition was a wonderful opportunity to bring together geology, astronomy, and sailing, and to look at Earth and other worlds from different perspectives. 🌍✨

We would like to thank the Institute of Geological Sciences at the University of Wrocław and the organizers of AstroGeoBaltica for giving our PhD student the opportunity to take part in this unique voyage and to bring astronomy on board! 💙

✨🌌 From May 8–10, 2026, the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Wrocław hosted KSAKN 2026 — a nationwide astronomy conference organized by the Student Astronomy Scientific Club.

Over 75 participants from top universities across Poland came together to share research, exchange ideas, and discuss the growing problem of light pollution 🌍🔭

The event featured inspiring lectures by scientists from the Astronomical Institute in Wrocław, student presentations, poster sessions, and amazing discussions 💫

We are especially proud that members of the Wrocław Astronomy Club won 🥇 Best Poster and 🥇 Best Presentation awards — both dedicated to light pollution research!

🔭☀️ Watching the Sun with ESA!

We are proud to announce that the ROSIE radio telescope has officially been launched at our Astronomical Observatory in Białków. This modern instrument was built as part of a program of the European Space Agency (ESA) and is designed for continuous monitoring of the Sun’s radio activity.

ROSIE constantly listens to the Sun. It records radio emissions in two frequency bands (1 GHz and 2.8 GHz), tracking phenomena such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections—events that can disrupt satellites, power grids, and other critical infrastructure across the European Union. The long-term goal of the project is to ensure that Europe becomes independent from external providers of this type of data.

On March 9, official acceptance tests were conducted by an ESA commission, followed by the ceremonial launch of the instrument the next day. The event was attended by, among others, Robert Olkiewicz (Rector of the University of Wrocław), Michał Tomczak (Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy), Robert Falewicz (Director of the Astronomical Institute), Holger Krag (Head of the Space Safety Programme at ESA), and representatives of the Polish Space Agency.

The project was designed and implemented by Paweł Rudawy, a heliophysicist from the Astronomical Institute of the University of Wrocław who has been studying solar physics for several decades. The technological partner in the consortium is ITTI sp. z o.o. from Poznań.
