Europe really needs reading. 75 million adult Europeans are unable to read with understanding and lack properly developed literacy skills. So Read. For Real!

Reading is the future. European Authors Day will offer celebrations across Europe thanks to the collaboration of an international consortium of seven partners from five countries supported by Creative Europe. The events will be held during November 11th-December 12th each year. Meetings with European Authors travelling from country to country will take place across Europe. Schools, preschools, libraries and bookstores from all around Europe are invited to join in with their creativity and unlimited potential! We want to offer the children and youth the experience of reading REAL books for fun, introducing up-to-date most trendy topics for REAL conversations around books, stimulating pleasure in REAL time around books, treating a conversation with a REAL author or creator as a formative experience - is the vision for : beyond nationality, latitude, political, social, religious or wealth backgrounds. Research proves reading to be a factor for development and innovation, a binder of civilisation, social capital and democracy. The main goal of the project is to make a positive impact on the European reading landscape.

📖 75 million adults in Europe cannot read with understanding? That's not just a personal loss - it's a societal one. Reading with understanding is what allows people to question a headline, spot a manipulated claim, and follow an argument instead of just reacting to it.

In a world of AI-generated content, disinformation, and information designed to bypass thinking rather than invite it, critical thinking isn't optional - and critical thinking starts with reading comprehension. You can't fact-check what you can't fully read. You can't question what you don't understand.

And yet reading for pleasure, the habit that builds these skills in the first place, is at its lowest point in years. This is exactly what exists for. From 11 November to 12 December, the brings authors, schools, libraries, bookstores and readers together across the whole continent - not just to celebrate literature, but to keep the skill of understanding it alive.
