🎹 Maria Ka ( Maria Kawska ) is a vocalist, pianist, composer and lyricist that performs music material mainly in Yiddish. Her works were presented in פֿאָרווערטס | The Forward, Tablet, Yiddishistke and other renown Jewish sources. Double People’s Choice award winner of Bubbe Awards for her original songs ( 2021: Krankheyt + 3rd Place from Jury; 2022: Ven es regnt ).

Main performances & co – operations include: Yiddish New York, Singer’s Warsaw, Open’er, Weimarer Filmsommer, Juedische Woche Leipzig, Shalom Polin, „Zbliżenia”, Polnisches Institut Berlin, POLIN Museum, The City of Gdańsk, Spaces of Memory Foundation.

🎤 She is also a researcher of Jewish culture, particularly of Yiddish cinematography, the role of women in Jewish world and multiple aspects of the Holocaust. Currently lecturing at University of Social Sciences and Humanities ( SWPS ) in Sopot.

A solo album released in June 2022 and written with the use of three languages: Yiddish, English and Polish, mixed within the songs’ structures.
It is dedicated to and inspired by the topic of multiidentity, different backgrounds and parts of it, creating oneness on the whole. It consists of three original pieces written by Maria Ka in contemporary times:

„Bingo בינגאָ”
„Enigma עניגמאַ”
„Ven es regnet ווען עס רעגנעט”
and one Yiddish classic:
„Dzhankoye דזשאַנקאָיע”

What is eaten on Summer Shabbat in different parts of the world?

A healthy spirit on a healthy table - culinary workshop with Alessia Di Donato

Alessia di Donato, a talented culinary chef from Rome, proposed and prepared, together with the numerous workshop participants from both offline Yiddish classes, three unique Summer Shabes dishes: one from Eastern Europe (okroshka), one from the Middle East (pilaf de arroz al horno) and one from her hometown (vignarola). The fusion-style menu thus combined Ashkenazi, Sephardic and Italian cuisine.

🥒 For example, a okroshka - cold soup based on kefir and sour pickle brine was supplemented with huevos haminados - Sephardic Jewish-Style eggs popular in Jewish communities throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East which get their brown colour and soft texture from the slow cooking process. (Huevos haminados are traditionally served at the Passover Seders of Calcutta, Turkey, Greece…).

🥬 The Italian vignarola, a beautiful green dish traditionally served during the grape picking in Lazio region, was garnished with Jewish-style deep fried artichokes (Carciofi alla giudia), mint and lemon confit pieces popular in the Middle East. We all learned how to prepare and serve all the three dishes and enjoyed them during our together Shabesmeal, accompanied by challah and some wine. L'chaim!

The Kiddush was made by Yuri Vedenyapin, our special guest with whom we were also singing some songs in Yiddish!

⚽️ Football player, sports journalist, observer of the changing reality after the outbreak of World War II, coworker of the Oneg Shabbat group - Szmuel Szajnkinder before the war wrote sports articles in various Yiddish newspapers, and after the outbreak of the war he noted down his observations - his notes have been preserved in the Ringelblum Archive.

⚽️ During the workshop, we will read one of his pre-war texts published in Sport-cajtung and a piece of handwritten notes from his war diary. On selected examples, we will look at the difficulties that researchers have in reading scanned texts from the pre-war press and notes, often written by hand in a hurry and in uncomfortable conditions.

In this course we will read texts about physical culture and water. In addition, we will dwell upon a number of grammatical topics that concern verbs—for instance, we will take a look at the ways in which prefixes can alter the meaning of verbs that describe movement. We will also continue the tradition of previous years and put together a “heftl” with short works by the participants.

On June 29 we invite our Seminar students to explore pre-war and contemporary Warsaw with us! 👣🚶🏻

Leisure time was a relatively new concept in the 1920s and 1930s, especially if you were from a working class. During the tour with Franciszek Bojańczyk we will discuss different ways in which Warsaw Jews spent their after-work time, from athletes in Maccabi to avid readers in „Parnas” library at Nowolipie. During the workshop conducted by Marek Głogowski we will record city sounds to capture its own "music". 🎵🎶
