Sharing the learning.... A one stop page for all your English language needs. You may even want some lessons indiividually or in a group. Everything is possible!

A chance to message and chat in English only; maybe your having problems with vocabulary or some tricky grammar. On this page you can meet people first and build your own class, when you have enough people I will be happy to run a course for you. Imagine having lessons with like minded people, based on the subjects you want. I would also like to organise a weekly or fortnightly meeting as a group for anyone who is interested either breakfast, lunch or after work.

I was watching the John Lewis advert which is sweet but this reminds me of all the young learner teachers who will be getting there students to write letters to Santa. Poor kids!!!!!! http://youtu.be/5PwYKvMzAg8

Peter Kay Misheard Song Lyrics 05/09/2012

Euphemisms can be confusing but so can songs. Often what we hear isn't what is being sung. Thank you Peter Kay...

Dead Parrot 03/09/2012

So after a few sleepless nights thinking about euphemisms I remembered this. How many euphemisms are there to describe death? Thank you Monty Python'

Passed on!
This parrot is no more!
He's ceased to be!
He's expired and gone to meet his maker!
He’s a stiff!
Bereft of life
He rests in peace!
He's pushing up daisies!
His metabolic processes are now history!
He’s kicked the bucket.
He’s shuffled off his mortal coil.
Run down the curtain and joined the bleeding invisible choir.
THIS IS AN EX-PARROT!!

So someone asked me about the meanings and I was surprised to find a different meaning in one of them, have I been using it incorrectly? On the job for me has always meant on the toilet having a pooh but apparently it means having s*x. "I was on the job last night!" This is rather embarrassing because my mom always used to shout up stairs "What are you doing?" and I would always reply "I'm on the job" What must she have thought!!!!!!! So some feedback would be good which is it toilet or s*x.

I was recently doing a reading and vocab lesson and the text included a euphemism. I explained to my students how obsessed we are with them in the UK. For instance she is not fat she is big b***d. Then I got thinking about the para olympics..... but enough of that. Here are a list of my favourites

1. Adult entertainment -
2. Batting for the other side
3. Cash in your chips
4. Economical with the truth
5. Gardening leave
6. On the job
7. Powder your nose
8. Put to sleep
9. Visually challenged
10. Slap and tickle

But what do they all mean for the natives easy peasy but for the linguistically challenged answers on a postcard.

I found this somewhere not quite sure where.....

"There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is'UP'

It's easy to understand UP meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we open our eyes in the morning, why do we wake UP ?
At a meeting, why does a topic come UP?
Why do we speak UP and why are the politicians UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends.
And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house, and some guys fix UP the old car.
At other times the little word has real special meaning.
People stir UP trouble, queue UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.
A drain must be opened UP because it is blocked UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.
When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP. When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP.

One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so........it is time to shut UP!
What you do with this information is up to you!"
