Join us for an open lecture by Kryštof Herold from the Institute of Translation Studies at Charles University in Prague, “Illusion, Translativity, and Distance in Dubbing.”

Here is a brief description of the talk:

Dubbing has long been one of the two major modes of film and TV translation in the Czech Republic. Unlike subtitles, it strives to preserve the illusion that we, as viewers, understand the film as a whole. Eager to fall under its spell, we willingly accept that foreign characters in foreign settings speak our mother tongue fluently. But is it really that simple? Do we, as viewers, expect a complete illusion 100% of the time, or do we also enjoy moments when the illusion is slightly disrupted?

In this talk, Kryštof Herold brings together discussions of illusion and aesthetic distance in film studies with Czechoslovak translation scholar Jiří Levý’s concept of “translativity” (překladovost) to explore how certain anti-illusionist features of full-cast dubbing may contribute to – rather than diminish – the value of the viewing experience.

How are literary animals different from those on the big screen? Drawing on examples from the silent era to Hollywood’s Golden Age, the speakers will explore how book-to-screen adaptations transform animal characters and how the shift in medium affects their portrayal. What is emphasized, altered, or lost when animals are translated into the reality of film?
The lecture will bring together perspectives on sound, humor, the materiality of animal bodies, and other aspects of adaptation, offering a fresh look at the relationship between literature, cinema, and animal representation.
Our speakers: Justyna Włodarczyk, Joanna Ziarkowska, Jack Harrison, Kamil Chrzczonowicz, Anna Potoczny, and Julia Wilde.
The event is part of the NCN-funded research project Animal Adaptations: Film Adaptations of Literary Animal Characters, from the Silent Screen to Hollywood’s Golden Age.

🐾 Have you wondered what your teachers do in the summer? Let's have a look!

Last week, colleagues from the Department of North American Cultures and Literatures (ZKLAP) attended the annual conference of the Polish Association for American Studies (PAAS), hosted this year by the University of Szczecin.

Representing our department were Marek Paryż, Aneta Dybska, and Tadeusz Pióro.

The photo gallery contains what can only be described as a rare scholarly phenomenon: an unusually high number of photographs of Marek Paryż — including several in which he appears to be smiling. We felt these historical records deserved preservation and wider circulation.

This year's conference also marked the end of Marek's term as President of PAAS. He received many well-deserved words of appreciation for his service to the association. If you browse through the photos, be sure to zoom in on the commemorative plaque he received.

👉 Maciej Rosiński and PhD candidates Yauheniya Mc Daniel and Natallia Valadzko attended the 2026 international conference of the Polish Cognitive Linguistics Association, held at the University of Gdańsk.
📖 We are delighted that they had an opportunity to share their research on the roles of corporeal imagination in literature, tabletop role-playing games (TRPGs), and popular science, and to exchange ideas with scholars from across Poland and beyond.

This year, Przemysław Grabowski-Górniak visited Leeds twice. In July, he attended the International Medieval Congress at the University of Leeds, and this week he returned to the city to take part in the Weapons in Society Conference at the Royal Armouries. ⚔️

The second visit was particularly exciting. In addition to presenting his research in one of the conference panels, he had the opportunity to explore the Royal Armouries’ study collection. Among its many remarkable treasures was a kriegsmesser that once belonged to King Henry VIII. 👑🗡️

Congratulations on another inspiring conference experience and fascinating archival discoveries! 📚✨

In July, Agnieszka Piskorska presented a keynote lecture at the Applications of Relevance Theory to Translation and Interpreting conference held at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
🎓🇧🇷 An academic campus and at the same time a nature reserve, the university area is very welcoming to humans and other species alike.
🌿🐒 You can see tiny monkeys hopping around trees right outside lecture halls.
🐒🌳 You can also see toucans flying over your head, but – an unskilled photographer as she is, in her own words – Agnieszka did not manage to take a photo of one for you. 🐦📸
