Native vs Non Native Teachers

These are some of the questions I often get from students and parents.

Is it a good idea to find a Native English Teacher who doesn't know my/our native language? What happens if the learner/student doesn't understand the Teacher? How will the teacher explain or translate?

ANSWER

An English Teacher, whether Native or Non Native, has to have the ability to explain, communicate and teach the language to learners effectively with ease. If a teacher is able to use various methods, activities, techniques and aids to help learners understand then not knowing the student's native language cannot be a barrier. It's important to find a Teacher who has the necessary teaching and mentoring skills.

Having lessons with a Native Speaker has several advantages. Lessons are held in English and this immerses the student into the language, learners/students might have difficulty speaking at first but hearing English improves their comprehension skills and ability to understand the natural language. The challenge of speaking only in English helps students improve their speaking skills and develops communication skills which are important in the real world. There are also many non textbook phrases, constructions and words that learners can catch and learn from a Native speaker which widens and improves their vocabulary.

When it comes to grammar a Native has to have the skills and qaulifications to teach the language, this is where the skills part of the puzzle is crucial. If a Native is competent in explaining and guiding there should be no difficulty in this area. Having a competent Native as a teacher can actually help learners develop a deeper understanding of complex grammar and language elements and at the same time improve their listening and comprehension skills.

I've had leaners who attended my lessons whose Native languages I did not know or speak. With steady work and guidance I've seen learners/students change their attitude towards having lessons in English only. They become even more involved in the idea of English only lessons after seeing the progress they make.

When considering lessons with a Native one should also consider getting a Native who is able to teach the language and has the skills to explain when the going gets tough (of which it does at times).
